Kirkstone Pass Inn sits at one of the highest points in the Lake District, a spectacular mountain-top retreat that towers above Lake Windermere with views that stretch for miles across the fells. This extraordinary property sleeps 22 guests across nine ensuite bedrooms, but it's the unique entertainment that sets it apart - think Las Vegas meets the Lakes with a full private casino, retro 1980s American diner, and enough arcade games to keep everyone happy for hours. The Kirkstone Pass Inn pub sits right on your doorstep, serving traditional ales and hearty meals with those same incredible mountain views, making it perfect for groups who want luxury accommodation without losing that authentic Lake District pub experience.
Windermere and Bowness buzz with activity just down the mountain road - independent shops, galleries, and restaurants like the famous Porthole for Italian cuisine or Hooked for the best fish and chips in the area. Ambleside's Wednesday market draws crowds from across the region, while the steamboat pier at Bowness connects you to the rest of the lake. Troutbeck village, with its traditional stone cottages and the Queen's Head pub, feels like stepping back in time, and Grasmere beckons with the Wordsworth Museum and that legendary gingerbread shop that's been running since 1854.
Your fell walking starts right from the front door - no driving to trailheads here. The path to Red Screes Pike climbs straight up behind the property, offering one of the best summit views in the Lakes for those who tackle the ascent. Gentler souls can follow old drove roads down into Troutbeck valley or pick up the Garburn Road for easier mountain walking with children. The Fairfield Horseshoe challenges serious hikers, while families love the easy stroll to Brothers Water. Down on Windermere, you can hire kayaks and paddleboards from Windermere Canoe Kayak, or book sailing lessons at the Royal Windermere Yacht Club.
The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway chugs through beautiful countryside, connecting with steamboat cruises for a proper vintage Lake District day out. Blackwell Arts and Crafts House showcases stunning period architecture, while Hill Top - Beatrix Potter's former home - draws visitors to Near Sawrey. For something completely different, try the low ropes course at Treetop Trek or explore the underground world of the Lake District's slate mines. Groups wanting a change of scene can drive over the Kirkstone Pass itself - England's highest pass - down into Ullswater for different mountain and lake scenery.
