The Stables is at Country Ways, a welcoming collection of country holiday cottages on a farm on the edge of Umberleigh in Devon. The owners have ensured it is comfortable for all guests, including those who use a wheelchair. Accessible features including level interior floors, ramp access, and a modern wetroom. Accommodation is in a converted barn with high ceilings, thick oak beams, excellent self-catering facilities, and space for five people to sleep in two bedrooms. The cottage has a private deck with seating and an outdoor hot tub, and access to the estate's 17 acres of woodland, games room, and seasonal bar.
Umberleigh is a pretty village beside the River Taw, three miles from The Stables. It's a lovely destination for a walk through the rolling Devon countryside, as you can refuel at one of its pubs and cafes when you arrive and do a little shopping before returning home. Umberleigh has a mainline train station connecting to the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre, Barnstaple and Exeter, giving you another easy way to sightsee without driving.
As well as being close to the beautiful River Taw, you're also close to Exmoor National Park, with its many miles of routes for walking, off-road cycling, and horseriding. If you're lucky, you'll see curlews, wild Exmoor ponies and red deer and hear cuckoos and willow warblers. The 180-mile Tarka Trail follows a former railway line through the Taw estuary, providing a mostly traffic-free way to enjoy the scenery on foot or by bicycle. You're only half an hour from Westward Ho! and other North Devon beaches for a day on the sand or walking along the South West Coast Path.
Family-friendly attractions include RHS Garden Rosemoor, National Trust Arlington Court and the National Carriage Museum, The BIG Sheep, Exmoor Zoo, and Watermouth Castle. There is a golf course down the road at Libbaton, and the Royal North Devon Golf Club is a 20-30-minute drive from the cottage.
