The Den is so lovely that you'll beg to extend your stay. With thick climbing plants around the door, it almost feels like entering a secret hideaway perfect for one or two people. Sleep soundly in the double bed, waking to the gentle sound of birdsong from the extensive gardens. Climb stairs to the first floor, where you can gaze at the leafy views through the Velux windows as you eat breakfast. The Den is one of six beautiful self-catering holiday cottages on Countryways Farm near Umberleigh village. It is very private and ideal for a romantic retreat.
Umberleigh is a friendly village with pubs, cafes and a station with trains going to Exeter, Barnstaple, and the Bideford Railway Heritage Museum. It's in the Taw and Torridge Estuary, with Exmoor National Park on the doorstep. Birdwatchers and wildlife lovers come here in all seasons to see the wealth of species that thrive here. You will see many of them as you walk around the farm's woodland and orchard. The owners are happy to arrange for guests to participate in seasonal farm activities like feeding spring lambs and pressing apples after the autumn harvest.
Local attractions range from the Tarka Trail for mostly traffic-free walking and cycling through gorgeous Devon countryside, to the Cobbaton Combat Collection in Chittlehampton. This specialist museum is mainly open in spring and summer, so check their website before going. Arlington Court and National Trust Carriage Collection, Exmoor Zoo, and RHS Gardens Rosemoor are also popular. The North Devon Coast and beaches like Westward Ho! are about half an hour's drive from The Den. You're also within easy reach of two golf courses and the South West Coast Path.
Shared facilities include a games room and a barn with washing machines and dryers. Those planning a wedding or other celebration can book The Den with other cottages on Countryways Farm to accommodate big groups.
