Number 17 is a relaxed riverside holiday cottage in Lynmouth for anyone wanting to stay by the coast without being right on top of the busiest spots. It sleeps five across three bedrooms, which gives it a bit more flexibility than many cottages in the village, whether that’s a family with children or a couple travelling together. The layout is straightforward and easy to settle into, making it equally suitable for a short break as for a longer stay. You’re close enough to walk down to the harbour, the river and the village centre, but far enough away to avoid the constant foot traffic that comes with it.
Lynmouth has a character all of its own. It’s smaller and quieter than many North Devon seaside towns, with the East and West Lyn rivers meeting just before they reach the sea. There are a handful of good places to eat within walking distance, including The Ancient Mariner, which is a reliable option for an easy evening out. The harbour area is compact but lively enough, and the walk up to Lynton via the cliff railway is still one of those simple things people tend to remember. Up top, you’ll find a few more cafés, pubs and shops if you want a bit more choice without driving anywhere.
It doesn’t take long to get out into Exmoor National Park, which is one of the main reasons people return to this part of the coast. Within a short drive, the landscape opens out into moorland, with wide views, grazing ponies and roads that are generally quiet once you’re off the main routes. The South West Coast Path runs straight through Lynmouth, so you can pick up a proper coastal walk in either direction without needing to plan ahead. For beach days or something busier, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe and Porlock are all within reach. Coming back to Number 17 at the end of the day feels noticeably calmer, which is often the whole point of staying here.
