Living
Highfields is a detached bungalow above Woolacombe, looking out across the bay towards the Atlantic. The waterfront holiday home sleeps four in two bedrooms, and everything is on one level, making it easy to settle in straight away. The main living space faces the sea, so the view is always there—whether you're making coffee, reading, or just sitting still for a bit. It's bright for most of the day, then softer towards evening when the light drops behind the headland. The walk down into the village takes about 10 minutes, and The Tides Inn is close enough for an easy dinner without the car.
Woolacombe life centres around the beach, and it's a good one: long, sandy, and wide enough that you can always find space even with the summer daytrippers. Early mornings are quieter, especially outside school holidays, and the tide pulls far enough out to leave long stretches of firm sand. Surf schools run along the main section of the beach, and equipment hire is easy if you want to try it without committing to a full day. For something a bit different, Barricane Beach sits just along the coast, known for its Sri Lankan beach café in the warmer months. Walk in the opposite direction to get to Putsborough Sands, slightly less busy and a bit more sheltered depending on the wind. Back in the village, there are a handful of cafés, bakeries and takeaways that you will want to return to the way the locals do.
The coastline outside of Woolacombe is more rugged. The path out towards Morte Point is one of the better local walks, especially later in the day when the light catches the cliffs and the sea feels further away. Croyde is a short drive and has a slightly different feel - more surf-focused, with a smaller bay and a few well-known pubs. A little further on, Saunton Sands stretches out in the opposite direction, backed by Braunton Burrows, one of the largest sand dune systems in the country. Inland, Exmoor National Park offers a complete change of pace, with open moorland, wooded valleys and walking routes that feel quieter than the coast. For day trips, Ilfracombe is about fifteen minutes away with its harbour, galleries and access to boat trips, while Arlington Court and the surrounding estate give you something slower if the weather turns.
