Manesty is an idyllic self-catering cottage in the Lake District, less than a mile from the hamlet of Grange and the shores of Derwent Water, and only five miles from Keswick. The welcoming farmhouse, which has been in the owner’s family for generations, enjoys stunning views towards Blencathra and across the Borrowdale Valley. It sleeps up to seven guests, with reductions as standard for smaller groups of 5 and 6.
If you have come to the Lake District to enjoy the beautiful walks, then you will not be disappointed. The southern path up Catbells starts just next to the cottage and you can be at the summit in around an hour - or less if you are feeling energetic! From the peak, you can enjoy the sight of the northern Lake District spread out before you, stretching for miles in all directions and showcasing why the beauty of this area is famous worldwide. Keen hikers will enjoy the challenge of Newlands Horseshoe, Skiddaw or Scafell Pike, and although the paths leading to Kings How and Castle Crag may be more accessible, they are certainly no less picturesque.
Fishing, golf, sailing, rock climbing, wild swimming and horse riding are just a few more ways you can enjoy being outdoors and active in the Lake District. Whinlatter Forest is a particularly good place for mountain biking, with trails suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. It is a beautiful mountain forest with miles of lovely waymarked walking paths, children’s themed walks, a Go-Ape high ropes course, cafe and picnic sites, and resident Ospreys that nest in the woods each year.
Popular Lake District attractions close to Manesty include Honister Slate Mine, The Lakes Distillery, The Pencil Museum and The Lake District Wildlife Park. Slightly further afield are Grasmere village, Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount (the homes of beloved English poet, William Wordsworth), and Windermere and the World of Beatrix Potter. Looking around, you will find it easy to understand how the landscape and communities have inspired artists and writers over the centuries. Staying at Manesty also means that a day trip to Hadrian’s Wall is also possible - it really is a holiday destination for everyone.
