About Cocklety How Byre

Cocklety How Byre is a unique name for a wonderful holiday cottage. Built in 2000 as an extension to an existing barn, it incorporates original stonework and double height ceiling to create a holiday home with an ageless charm. The byre is perfect for couples, with the added flexibility of being able to accommodate a third person on a comfortable sofa-bed. With touches like oak floors and leather sofas, not to mention the breathtaking views, Cocklety How Byre is the ideal base for your holiday in the Lake District.

The Lake District has been a favourite holiday destination for centuries thanks to its incredible landscape. If the lakes are beautiful, then the mountains are breathtaking - literally in some cases! Basing yourself at Cocklety How Byre is a fantastic way to give yourself easy access to the region’s best attractions like Catbells, the peak of which can be reached in an hour thanks to a path that runs right past the cottage at Manesty. Explore Honister Slate Mine or climb to the peak of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and experience views unlike anywhere else in the world. If that sounds too energetic, then jump in the car or on the bus and ascend the glorious Honister Pass, or grab a seat on the Edwardian Keswick Launch that leaves from Brandelhow and Lodore, both of which are within a mile and a half of Cocklety How Byre, and enjoy Derwentwater from the water.

The varied landscape and stunning views are as attractive to cyclists as to walkers and hikers. Mountain bikers will find ample opportunity to challenge their skills at Whinlatter Forest, which boasts the longest purpose-built trails in the Lake District. Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike both offer superb downhill trails which make the push to the peak worth the effort. If roads cycling is more your things you can try the challenging ascent of Honsiter or Whinlatter Passes or the more gentle terrain and quiet country lanes around the Back o’ Skiddaw.

Keswick is a great market town around five miles from Manesty. Here, you will find everything that you need for a relaxed self-catering holiday, as well as excellent pubs and cafes if you do not feel like cooking for yourself. Keswick is a friendly place where local business owners will be happy to help you make the most of your time there, whether you want to hire a bike or a boat, explore the local museums, buy a fishing permit, or enjoy a show at the cinema or theatre. At less than a mile from Cocklety How Byre, the hamlet of Grange is closer to your home-away-from-home, and a good place to enjoy a cooked breakfast before diving into a day of discovery and fun.

Cocklety How Byre is one of a number of excellent self-catering cottages at Manesty and can be hired together with a larger property if you are visiting as part of a group. Its location at the base of Catbells together with its impressive standard of accommodation and stunning views of the Borrowdale Valley will ensure your Lake District holiday is one you will never want to forget.

  • The living area has reclining leather armchairs and sofa, with an additional sofa bed to either provide extra seating or sleep a third guest. Glass French doors open onto the paved patio and let in lots of natural light as well as framing beautiful views.
