The northern Lake District is stunning. Forests and mountains are reflected in the water of expansive lakes, and there are lots of friendly hamlets, villages and market towns that are a pleasure to visit. One of these, the hamlet of Grange, is within a mile of Manesty Band, with a cafe where you can tuck into a cooked breakfast before hitting the trails for a full day of exploring. Just a few miles further, Keswick is a vibrant town with a twice-weekly market, supermarket and lots of independent shops and places to eat and drink. As the main town of the Northern Lakes, Keswick also has banks and other amenities, as well as museums, a cinema, theatre and other entertainment.
If you are in the Lake District to enjoy walking through a dramatic landscape, then you will be in your element at Manesty Band, with footpaths leading to stunning locations right from the front door. You can roll out of bed and scale Catbells within an hour, stopping at the top for a flask of tea and a picnic breakfast, or pack your rucksack and head out for a day climbing the higher peaks of Kings How, High Spy and Dale Head. Those who prefer a stroll to a hike are also well catered for in a landscape that features footpaths to Derwent Water, beside the River Derwent or along the valley to the Bowder Stone. The southern shore of Derwent Water is only 15 minutes away, and you can walk along the lakeshore and climb aboard the Edwardian launch that regularly sails around the lake, between Keswick and Lodore, Brandlehow and Portinscale. The high fells of Skiddaw, Great Gable or Scafell Pike are just a bus ride away.
Whinlatter Forest is a brilliant family-friendly day out. There are walking paths to suit all abilities - including buggy-friendly ones, a fantastic children’s themed walk, hair-raising Go Ape high ropes course, three professionally designed mountain bike trails and wildlife everywhere you look. Guests at Manesty Band have access to undercover bike storage, and there is a bike shop in Keswick where you can hire a bike and hit the other trails around Manesty and Keswick, including routes around Threlkeld and Skiddaw.
Beatrix Potter spent holidays near Manesty at Lingholm and Fawe Park and was inspired there to create characters like Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin. Littletown, where Lucie met Mrs Tiggywinkle is just over the hill from Manesty.
