About The Annexe - Staybythewye

The Annexe (Staybythewye) is in the quirkily named hamlet Hole-in-the-Wall on the eastern banks of the River Wye, across the water from Foy and less than four miles from the lovely market town of Ross-on-Wye. The holiday cottage is in part of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with beautiful walks accessible from the door. Herefordshire is one of the nation's favourite spots for a relaxing rural holiday. It has excellent road links from the M50, historic towns, a beautiful cathedral city, and fantastic food and drink. This cottage, which sleeps two people in one bedroom with a sofa bed to sleep one or two children, is ideal for couples or families who want to leave their desk on a Friday and be relaxing with a pint of local cider before they know it.

Hole-in-the-Wall is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it sized hamlet with only a few houses and a lot of farmland. It's not to be confused with the village of Foy, although the mile-long walk between the two is very picturesque. Ross-on-Wye is just under four miles away, or nearly six if you walk or cycle on the path beside the river, which is a minute's stroll from the cottage. You'll find all of the shops and amenities you need in Ross, which has a local market every Thursday and Saturday and a great choice of other places to shop and eat. If you want more variety, then Hereford is 12 miles north, while Gloucester is 21 miles south, with both journeys taking around half an hour.

The Wye Valley AONB is heaven for anyone who enjoys being outdoors. Walking, road cycling, mountain biking and fishing are all popular activities, as are canoeing (there is a canoe launch close to the cottage for guests who have their own vessel), stand-up paddleboarding, and boating. Hereford and Gloucester both have magnificent cathedrals, and you can also visit the ruins of Tintern Abbey and Llantony Priory. There might not be as many castles on the English side of the border, but those that are, such as Goodrich, Wilton and Eastnor, are certainly worth seeing. Offa's Dyke still marks miles of the border between England and Wales and is famous in walking circles for being one of the best long-distance footpaths in Britain.

The Annexe is part of the owner's property and sits in a courtyard setting but is completely private and self-contained. It is available all year round for bookings.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Annexe is a lovely timber-clad cottage attached to the owner's barn. It has a ramp leading to the entrance, and accommodation is all on the ground floor level (one step down into the bedroom). The style is modern rustic, with lots of wood and natural shades creating a calm and welcoming environment.

  • Cosy seating and TV corner with a sofa that opens into a sofa-bed and a matching armchair. The log burner is a lovely extra for cold weather. Glass doors open onto the private patio and garden.
  • Kitchen/diner at the other end of the main living area, underneath the apex and exposed beams. The wood effect flooring is a stylish addition to the modern oak units and dark brown stone workbench. A breakfast bar with four stools provides plenty of dining space.
  • Bedroom with a high ceiling, exposed beams, and a kingsize bed. Contrasting with the living area's neutral tones, this room has luxuriously deep shades that embrace visitors and soothe them to sleep. There are bedside tables, reading lights, and a desk/dressing table with a chair.
  • Huge ensuite with a large shower, separate bath, WC and a vanity unit with a handbasin.

Outside: Doors open from the living area and the kitchen onto the patio, where there is an outdoor dining setting for four. The rest of the garden is a lawn with flowering plants providing extra privacy. Guests have the use of two private car parks. There is a secure outdoor storeroom for bikes, canoes, fishing equipment etc and CCTV outside.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are all included. Guests can purchase logs from the owner or local shops/garages. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability. A travel cot (no bedding) and fireguard are available. Smoking and pets are not permitted.
