Dog Friendly Herefordshire

You will be spoilt for choice by the large number of fantastic walks in this beautiful part of the world. The Herefordshire Trail, which is broken down into ten different sections, provides a circular walk around the whole county. Passing through woodlands, river valleys, apple orchards and rolling hills you will find a wealth of historic features as well as five market towns and a number of charming villages and country pubs.

For those looking for something a little less challenging there are numerous shorter walks through this beautiful countryside. The 3-mile circular walk from the medieval village of Weobly is perfect for working up an appetite before enjoying a leisurely lunch at the dog-friendly Salutation Inn. You can’t fail to be enchanted by this picturesque village that is characterised by traditional black and white half-timbered houses set against a perfect rural landscape.

You would be forgiven for thinking that it was all about stunning walks and country pubs in Herefordshire but there is also a wealth of attractions and activities to keep everyone entertained. A trip to Eastnor Castle is a fantastic family day out. Be wowed by the magnificent Great Hall and gothic Drawing Room before getting lost in the Knights Maze. Kids will love the natural play areas and the 5,000 acres of woodlands and lake walks will definitely get those tails wagging. Dogs can join you for a tour of the castle before enjoying an old sock flavoured dog-friendly ice cream!

Historians will be fascinated by the National Trust’s Croft Castle and Parkland. The history and politics of this intimate family home date back to before the Domesday Book. Sitting in 1,500 acres of ancient parkland there is plenty of opportunity for your four-legged friends to stretch their legs too. Admire the historic orchards and vineyard in the walled garden, explore the Iron Age Hill fort or tackle the orienteering course. Kids will love the mini castle and natural play area.

Gastronomical lovers will be pleased to know that there are a large number of farmers markets, dog-friendly eateries as well as vineyards and breweries in Herefordshire. Spend a lazy morning browsing the stalls at Hereford, Ross on Wye, Ledbury or Leominster farmers markets or take a tour and sample some of the delights at Frome Valley Vineyard. From here you can walk to the village of Bishop’s Frome where you can enjoy a hearty meal in the Green Dragon Inn (dogs most welcome!). Curl up in front of the fire in the winter or enjoy the pub garden on a summers’ afternoon.

The stunning walks, fascinating heritage and excellent choice of dog-friendly cottages to rent in Herefordshire’s picturesque towns and villages makes this a perfect spot for a pet-friendly break at any time of the year.
