Cottages in the Cairngorms

A quintessential Highland setting, the cherished Cairngorms provide plenty of outdoor pursuits with mountainous treks for the adventurous types and an exciting mountain railway for those who prefer to travel in style. The railway is fully accessible by wheelchair along with a trail to the summit, so nobody need miss out on the chance to climb Britain's highest mountain range.

Once you've reached the summit and worked up an appetite, you can treat yourself to lunch at the Ptarmigan Restaurant – officially the highest restaurant in the UK. You can even get some retail therapy courtesy of the 'shop at the top'.

Though the mountain range is understandably the main attraction, there are plenty of other outdoor activities to enjoy and sites to see in the Cairngorms. History fans will will be at home here with the many castles in the area, such as Braemar Castle, which has guided tours from knowledgeable local guides. There are also museums, leisure centres, art venues and beautiful gardens.

The area is home to a number of breweries and distilleries that are well worth a trip, such as the Glenlivet Distillery, offering daily tours that include a complimentary dram of the good stuff. If traditional ales are more your taste, the Cairngorm Brewery also offers tours and a shop full of quality local beers and ales.
