Otley Beck is what Lakeland cottage dreams are made of. An idyllic, romantic retreat for two, beautiful countryside all around, plenty of attractions within striking distance and a lovingly created and special place to stay.
One of the two cottages at Howe Foot and next door to the owner's house, Otley Beck stands in about an acre of garden and grounds , with a kitchen, sitting room/diner and shower room on the ground floor and a gallery bedroom upstairs, defined by a solid oak floor, cosy wool rugs, plenty of storage space and - its main feature - the king-sized Hypnos bed and high quality bedding. Two side tables, each with a mounted wall lamp, and a window that overlooks the field complete the picture.
A downstairs bedroom is just off the kitchen and if any guest should prefer this to the one upstairs, its use can be arranged prior to any visit. Otherwise it is kept locked.
There's a striking aqua-coloured AGA cooker in the kitchen (which remains constantly switched on), a gorgeous wood-burning stove in the lounge and local slate on the floors. Oak beams, curved walls and quirky nooks and crannies add to the character of the place. Otley Beck was certainly a labour of love for the owners and at every turn you can see the care, craftsmanship and attention to detail which went into its making.
The great thing here is one minute you can be quietly sitting beside the beck or walking up the lane to the nature reserve, owned and run by Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and the next minute heading for all sorts of other adventures.
Coniston Water and the village of Coniston are a few miles to the north, both places associated with land and water speed ace Donald Campbell and the great Victorian John Ruskin.
The Duddon Valley - a great favourite of poet William Wordsworth - is slightly further away to the north west while Grizedale Forest, with its walking and cycling trails, lies to the north between Coniston Water and Windermere.
The actual southern tip of Windermere is about 25 minutes drive away and close by is the Lakeland Motor Museum, the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and - at Lakeside itself - a jetty for Windermere Cruises.
All that, plus the foodie hub of Cartmel, Holker Hall and Gardens near Cartmel and down the road from Howe Foot, the festival town and birthplace of Stan Laurel, Ulverston. The Furness peninsula coast is not a million miles away either. Otley Beck Cottage - what a wonderful base for a holiday.
