Cross the small bridge over Otley Beck and you've reached the quiet, enchanting world of Howe Foot. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and within striking distance of many Lakeland attractions, Garden Cottage is one of two romantic holiday retreats here, both of them accommodating two people each.
Once a workshop for the making of oak swill baskets - a centuries old Lakeland craft - Garden Cottage has been meticulously restored by the owners. Their care, craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident throughout the property, from the handmade kitchen and local slate floors to the oak beams, wood-burning stove and the Rayburn in the kitchen. All is on one floor, with the bathroom (shower) right next to the bedroom.
A private seating area outside, with smashing views of the nearby hills, is the perfect place to relax after a day's exploring or walking. And what a great choice of places to explore!
Coniston Water, the Lake District's third largest lake, is a few miles to the north, with Brantwood, the former home of the great Victorian John Ruskin, on one side of the water. On the other side is the village of Coniston where the Ruskin Museum houses Donald Campbell's restored hydroplane 'Bluebird K7'. Explore the lake itself on either Coniston Launch or the Steam Boat Gondola.
Closer to Garden Cottage is the festival town of Ulverston, with its Laurel and Hardy Museum (Stan Laurel was born here) and numerous independent shops. A 70 mile walk - the Cumbria Way - links Ulverston with Carlisle.
The southern tip of Windermere is about 25 minutes drive away and close by is the Lakeland Motor Museum, the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and - at Lakeside itself - a jetty for Windermere Lake Cruises.
Cartmel is not far away either, home to a magnificent priory church, a racecourse and the shop where Cartmel sticky toffee pudding was once made. Simon Rogan has two restaurants in the pretty village as well: L'Enclume with its three Michelin stars and Rogan & Co with one star.
Three pubs are also within walking distance of Garden Cottage: the Farmer’s Arms at Lowick Green, the Royal Oak at Spark Bridge and the Red Lion at Lowick Bridge.
Garden Cottage and Otley Beck Cottage stand in about an acre of lovingly maintained garden and grounds. On the doorstep - just up the lane outside - is Lowick Beacon, a nature reserve from where there are magnificent views towards Coniston Water, the Coniston fells and Morecambe Bay. That gives you an idea of Howe Foot's idyllic location in this southern part of Cumbria.
