Chauffeur’s Cottage is a romantic retreat for couples deep in the heart of Devon. Tucked away at the end of a private driveway and surrounded by the beauty of the Exmoor National Park, you will find it easy to switch off from everyday stress and enjoy spending time together. The period cottage sleeps two people in a spacious king-sized bedroom, with accommodation all on one level. Despite its tranquil location, you are less than a mile from the beach and only a ten-minute walk from the popular Hunter’s Inn. The cottage is one of three on the estate which, when hired together, sleep up to eight people.
The cottage is on a private estate near the hamlet of Martinhoe in the Heddon Valley. The unspoiled landscape of the national park offers 600 miles of footpaths and bridleways so you can explore on foot, by bike or on horseback as well as by car. A guided trek is a fantastic way to experience the beauty of Exmoor National Park, and there are several excellent riding schools nearby.
The Heddon Valley is so peaceful that it almost feels like a magical secret. It is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and one of the few places in the South West where you can see otters in the wild. You can find the footpath leading to the coast and Heddon’s Mouth close to Chauffeur’s Cottage, taking you beside the Heddon River and through ancient woodland to reach the spectacular coastline which is managed by the National Trust. Another fantastic coastal walk is in the Valley of the Rocks, well known not only for its spectacular views but also for the herd of wild goats who live there.
Lynton and Lynmouth are only a few miles away, and a good place to buy provisions for your stay. The Victorians referred to these villages as “Little Switzerland” thanks to the clean air and cliff top location. A journey on the Lynton funicular is a must-do. Opened in 1888 it proves that sometimes simple is best, as this ecologically friendly lift transports passengers (including dogs) using only water from the River Lyn. In addition to a good variety of independent shops and places to eat and drink, there is a craft centre, galleries and a vintage cinema.
Other nearby Devon attractions include Watersmeet, a beautiful gorge with waterfalls and thick woodland that is stunning in autumn and cool and shady in summer, Clovelly, Porlock and Porlock Weir. Take a ride on the Lynton to Barnstaple Steam Railway, or spend the day at Arlington Court and admire the fantastic gardens and the National Trust Carriage Collection. Marwood Hill Gardens are lovely, and the venue also has an award-winning tea room.
Even if you only have a few days here, the high standard of accommodation and superb location of Chauffeur’s Cottage will ensure you get the most out of your stay.

Accommodation at Chauffeur's Cottage is all on one level.
Outside: A covered porch at the front of the property provides a lovely spot to sit and admire the view of the Heddon Valley towards the sea. A utility room with a freezer, tumble dryer and payphone is shared with the other two cottages. There is a secured shared garden with a picnic table and benches. The cottage comes with private off-street parking for one car.
Additional Information: All utilities, linen and towels (not beach towels) are included. The cottage is dog-friendly, and up to two well-behaved pets are welcome with prior agreement from the owner (an additional charge of £20 per pet applies). The cottage has WiFi and oil-fired central heating. Short breaks are available - restrictions and special tariffs apply so please discuss with the owner. Chauffeur's Cottage is a no-smoking property. A refundable damage deposit of £75 will be requested at booking. This will cover any damage to the property and other incurred costs (e.g. additional cleaning) during your stay. If there is damage then a partial refund or no refund is given, dependent on the extent of the damage. If there isn’t any damage, then the deposit is refunded in full.
