About Norwood Cottage

Norwood Cottage is the result of skill and hard work. Formerly stables for a country house in the desirable village of High Casterton, the building has been transformed into extremely comfortable holiday accommodation within walking distance (twenty minutes) of the beautiful Georgian town of Kirkby Lonsdale. There is space for up to four guests in two bedrooms, so Norwood Cottage is ideal for couples, small families and friends who want to stay in a peaceful rural location without being isolated.

High Casterton is a quiet village in the Lune Valley. It gets very little through traffic, and Norwood Cottage is at the end of a no-through road so you can be assured that your peace will not be disturbed. There are some lovely walks in the area including up to the peak of Cragg Hill, which is 682 metres above sea level sitting above one of the most impressive networks of caves in the UK. It may be quiet, but there is nothing backward about the village which boasts fast broadband, a Grade II listed church, golf club and a petrol station with village shop attached. Across from the garage/shop is the Pheasant Inn pub, a fifteen minute walk along the country lanes.

One and a half miles from the cottage, Kirkby Lonsdale is a stunning Georgian market town with a rich history. Just twenty minutes walk along the footpath/bridleway from Norwood Cottage, this vibrant cosmopolitan town offers an excellent choice of interesting boutique shops, pubs and restaurants. Spend a few hours browsing the shops, stop off for a pot of tea or something stronger at one of the excellent cafes and pubs, and squeeze your way along Salt Pie Lane. Although Kirkby Lonsdale looks very Georgian, it is far older and featured in the Domesday Book. The town was granted its market charter in 1227, with a regular market still being held every Thursday.

Its vicinity to both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales makes Norwood Cottage perfect for visitors who enjoy being outdoors. There is a vast choice of fantastic footpaths, cycling trails and bridleways that you could discover somewhere new every day of your holiday. At the top of your list should be Ruskin’s View, immortalised in paint by the great British artist, Joseph Turner, while Devil’s Bridge is another beauty spot that dates from the Middle Ages.

A few miles away, the Hutton Roof Nature Reserve and Farleton Knott are both good destinations, while the borders of the Yorkshire Dales National Park were recently expanded to include Barbon. The Benthams and Dentdale are both stunning locations, or you could walk between the villages of Melling and Hornby. Levens Hall is also a must to visit and was recently incorporated into the Lake District National Park, with a magnificent Elizabethan country house and estate.

There’s nothing not to like about Norwood Cottage. It is charming, comfortable and in a fantastic location with good access to two national parks, plus a local village pub and the excellent amenities of Kirkby Lonsdale within walking distance. Whether you like to plan a full agenda in advance or you are the sort of holidaymaker who prefers to let the day take you where it will, this is a great place to stay.
