About Hill House

Hill House is a gorgeous farmhouse, originally built in 1679, but recently refurbished to provide a high standard of accommodation for guests wanting to visit this beautiful corner of Cumbria. Using local craftsman the owner's have retained the original character and charm of the cottage whilst ensuring guests have all the modern day luxuries to provide a true home away from home holiday experience. With underfloor heating throughout downstairs, a log burner, fantastic rainwater and traditional showerheads to revive sleepy heads and high quality beds to ensure a good nights sleep, no stone has been left unturned. Sleeping five guests in three bedrooms this pretty cottage is perfect for families (with children over ten) and friends.

Hill House is sandwiched between the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Yorkshire Dales National Park in the pretty village of Winton. Set in an idyllic location the cottage is surrounded by stunning views and beautiful countryside, and is just a short walk to the Bay Horse Inn which serves fantastic food. There is a greater choice of places to eat, drink and shop in Kirkby Stephen which is just a half hour stroll along a footpath from the fields behind the cottage, a route taken by Wainwright. As well as an impressive selection of historic buildings the Parish Church in Kirkby Stephen houses a famous 10th Century Loki Stone, which dates back to Viking times and is thought to be one of only two such stones in the whole of Europe.

If you are looking to stretch your legs a little further the surrounding countryside is a haven for walkers and cyclists. It will come as no surprise that Kirkby Stephen is a “Walkers are Welcome” town with local routes including Wild Boar Fell, Nine Standards Rigg as well as Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk which passes through the town. Alternatively explore the local lanes and footpaths along the River Eden and at Smardale Nature Reserve or be wowed by the impressive viaducts at Merrygill and Podgill. Cyclists can explore the Cumbria Cycle Way or you can enjoy the beautiful rural scenery on horseback. With the Lake District also within easy reach for a day out the options for exploring the great outdoors are endless.

When you are ready to hang up your walking boots for the day there are plenty of attractions and activities to keep you busy. Take a ride on a steam train on the Carlisle Settle Railway, enjoy a round of golf, or go fishing in the River Eden. The charming town of Appleby, famous for its annual horse fair, is a lovely place to spend a morning or cheese lovers shouldn't miss a chance to visit the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes. With bookings available all year round, it is always a good time to book a holiday in this magical corner of Cumbria.

Location (Cumbria)

Detached former farmhouse which has been recently renovated to a very high standard. Accommodation is over two floors.

Downstairs:

  • Welcoming lounge with two comfy leather sofas and an armchair is a cosy spot to relax at the end of the day. Snuggle up next to the wood burning stove and watch the 42 inch Smart TV or switch off the TV and play one of the traditional board games left by the owners. There is an attractive stone window seat where you can sit and watch the world go by.
  • Kitchen/diner has everything you need to cook up a feast on holiday including a Stoves oven, hob, extractor, dishwasher, Kenwood microwave, fridge/freezer and a washing machine. The ivory coloured cabinets are complimented by a modern silestone worktop whilst the kitchen sink has stunning countryside views. The dining area has a characterful exposed stone wall, a TV and table and chairs to seat six guests. On a summer's evening you can throw open the patio doors and enjoy far stretching views across the lawn to the local fells. During the winter months the whole of the downstairs is kept cosy with underfloor heating.
  • Modern wet room with a large shower with both a rainwater and traditional shower head. There is also a WC, basin, towel rail and an illuminated shaver mirror.
  • Understairs cupboard can be used for drying coats and boots.

Climb the original stone staircase to three bedrooms upstairs. Whilst the stairs are not particularly steep, due to their hard surface the owners recommend that bookings are not made for children under ten years old.

Upstairs:

  • Gorgeous master bedroom with a king sized bed, bedside tables, large fitted wardrobe, and dressing table with mirror and stool.
  • Spacious twin bedroom with two single beds (which can be a zip and link super king-size bed on request), a bedside table, a fitted wardrobe, and a dressing table. Both the master and twin bedrooms have exposed original wooden flooring and a characterful stone window seat with stunning countryside views over the Pennines.
  • Smaller third bedroom with a single bed, bedside table, hanging area and chest of drawers. The exposed eaves and wooden pegged beams give this room plenty of character and you can also enjoy lovely views over the farmyard and beyond onto the fells.
  • Wake yourself up with a rainwater morning shower in the large family shower room which also has a WC, washbasin and radiator.

Outside: The sun trap terrace and lawn area to the rear of the cottage is a lovely spot to enjoy a morning cup of tea, evening sundowner, or simply to relax and enjoy the beautiful views. The garden backs onto the owner's field where you can often spot red squirrels and hedgehogs and enjoy the sounds of owls and woodpeckers from the beech trees. Please note the farmyard at the rear of the property is a private area and is no longer in use. There is off road parking for two cars at the front of the property.

Additional information: Utilities, Wifi, bed linen and towels are included. One well behaved dog is welcome with the owners prior agreement. Cottage rules for dogs are that dogs are not allowed upstairs and that dogs must not be allowed on the furniture. Dogs must not be left unattended in the cottage without the cottage owners permission. The stone interior stairs are not suitable for young children and people with limited mobility (please enquire when booking). Smoking is not permitted.
