Hill House is a gorgeous farmhouse, originally built in 1679, but recently refurbished to provide a high standard of accommodation for guests wanting to visit this beautiful corner of Cumbria. Using local craftsman the owner's have retained the original character and charm of the cottage whilst ensuring guests have all the modern day luxuries to provide a true home away from home holiday experience. With underfloor heating throughout downstairs, a log burner, fantastic rainwater and traditional showerheads to revive sleepy heads and high quality beds to ensure a good nights sleep, no stone has been left unturned. Sleeping five guests in three bedrooms this pretty cottage is perfect for families (with children over ten) and friends.
Hill House is sandwiched between the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Yorkshire Dales National Park in the pretty village of Winton. Set in an idyllic location the cottage is surrounded by stunning views and beautiful countryside, and is just a short walk to the Bay Horse Inn which serves fantastic food. There is a greater choice of places to eat, drink and shop in Kirkby Stephen which is just a half hour stroll along a footpath from the fields behind the cottage, a route taken by Wainwright. As well as an impressive selection of historic buildings the Parish Church in Kirkby Stephen houses a famous 10th Century Loki Stone, which dates back to Viking times and is thought to be one of only two such stones in the whole of Europe.
If you are looking to stretch your legs a little further the surrounding countryside is a haven for walkers and cyclists. It will come as no surprise that Kirkby Stephen is a “Walkers are Welcome” town with local routes including Wild Boar Fell, Nine Standards Rigg as well as Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk which passes through the town. Alternatively explore the local lanes and footpaths along the River Eden and at Smardale Nature Reserve or be wowed by the impressive viaducts at Merrygill and Podgill. Cyclists can explore the Cumbria Cycle Way or you can enjoy the beautiful rural scenery on horseback. With the Lake District also within easy reach for a day out the options for exploring the great outdoors are endless.
When you are ready to hang up your walking boots for the day there are plenty of attractions and activities to keep you busy. Take a ride on a steam train on the Carlisle Settle Railway, enjoy a round of golf, or go fishing in the River Eden. The charming town of Appleby, famous for its annual horse fair, is a lovely place to spend a morning or cheese lovers shouldn't miss a chance to visit the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes. With bookings available all year round, it is always a good time to book a holiday in this magical corner of Cumbria.
