About The Farmhouse

The Farmhouse is a traditional Lake District home on a family-run smallholding near Ulverston. The owners raise goats, sheep, ducks, and hens, all within sight of The Old Man of Coniston. Sleeping six people in three bedrooms, the beautifully refurbished Georgian property makes a perfect holiday cottage for families, including those with dogs. It's excellent for people who enjoy long, bracing walks through fells and up mountains, with the long-distance Cumbrian Way and a wealth of other footpaths nearby.

Ulverston has all the shops and amenities you need for a self-catering holiday, including farmers markets for fresh produce and friendly pubs when you fancy a drink and a meal out. The town is close to Morecambe Bay, and driving around the area is an ideal way to spend a relaxing day exploring and sightseeing along the coast. We highly recommend visiting the Sir John Barrow Monument for breathtaking panoramic views. Alternatively, go west for six miles to the pretty town of Broughton-in-Furness. It's in the Duddon Valley near Black Combe and the stone circle at Swinside.

There are endless ways to have fun in the Lake District. Walking and mountain biking are always popular, and being close to Coniston Water and Windermere means you can sail, fish, and swim to your heart's content. You're within easy reach of National Trust properties like Hill Top, the home of famed British author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. Kendal is nearby, and you're less than an hour from Scafell Pike, England's highest peak.

The Farmhouse is so comfortable that you'll feel at home as soon as you walk in. It truly is a wonderful choice for your self-catering family holiday in the Lake District. The owners also have a one-bedroom cottage, The Barn, that can be booked with The Farmhouse for extended families.

Location (The Lake District)

Accommodation Comprises:

The Farmhouse is a lovingly renovated Georgian home with warmth, charm, and gorgeous views. Accommodation is over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • Oak parquet floors and a fireplace with a log burner are beautiful features of the living/dining room. Comfortable Laura Ashley sofas and armchairs invite you to sit down and relax, unwinding with a book, something on the Smart TV, or good conversations with people you love. The long table easily seats six and has plenty of room for serving dishes. Sliding doors lead into the kitchen and let you open the space from the front to the back of the cottage.
  • The kitchen's slate flooring stylishly contrasts with Shaker-style cabinets and oak worktops. It's extremely well-equipped for a family self-catering holiday, and the owner can provide farm-fresh free-range eggs for breakfast. The kitchen is at the rear of the cottage, and French doors open into the garden. Appliances include a dishwasher and a Nespresso coffee machine.
  • A snug/library has shelves lined with books, a daybed for reading and watching TV, and a desk if you need to work during your stay.
  • The downstairs cloakroom with WC and handbasin is a convenient addition.

Upstairs:

  • Restored to its original glory, a pitch pine staircase leads from the hallway to the first floor and the bedrooms.
  • The main bedroom is a vision of oak flooring, a king-sized bed, and beautiful mountain views through sash windows. The ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • Bedroom Two is another spacious room with a king-sized bed. At the front of the cottage, it has gorgeous views over the garden and the fells.
  • A third bedroom is a lovely twin with two single beds and proper storage. As with the rooms downstairs, the bedrooms are beautifully decorated with Laura Ashley furnishings and muted Farrow & Ball shades that soothe the soul and complement the natural surroundings.
  • The large family bathroom has a deep bath and a separate shower to cater for all preferences. It also has a WC and a handbasin. The window seat overlooks private woodland.

Outside: A secure garden has a lawn and a gate opening onto a woodland walk. The area near the back door is paved with seating. The woods are part of the farm and a great spot for kids to explore and build dens. A separate building has bike storage and laundry facilities (shared with The Barn). There is parking close to the house.

Additional Information: Two well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. They need to be kept on a lead around the farm and animals. WiFi, utilities, bed linen and bath towels are provided. Smoking is not allowed.
