Fieldgate Barn is a magnificent 16th-17th century stone barn conversion that brings together Cumbrian heritage and contemporary luxury in spectacular fashion. Part of the historic Fieldgate Farmstead, this exceptional holiday cottage provides sophisticated self-catering accommodation for up to 14 guests and two extra children, in 7 ensuite bedrooms and 2 pull out beds, in its own large grounds with no immediately neighbours around, where the extended families, groups of friends, and multi-generational parties will find it perfectly suited to their gatherings needs and celebrations.
The distinctive limestone construction tells the story of centuries past. Soaring oak kingpin posts reach to the full-height ceiling, exposed stone walls create dramatic backdrops, and underfloor heating ensures modern comfort throughout the ground floor. Guests step into a space that feels both grandly historic and warmly welcoming.
Bampton sits in the heart of the Lowther Valley, offering visitors authentic taste of Lake District life away from the crowds. Traditional character defines the village, complete with its local shop/café, and the Mardale Inn just half a mile away offers local produce and relaxed pub meals.
Shap, four mils away, brings additional amenities – a COOP, café & take away, and an Award winning Chippy and welcoming pubs that have served travellers for generations. Penrith lies ten miles North, where independent shops line the streets alongside major supermarkets which also deliver to Fieldgate, making group catering effortless.
Askham, is a pretty village 4 miles north of Fieldgate & on the edge of Lowther Castle Park Estate, with two friendly pubs and a village shop alongside the village green. The village is also home to historic Askham Hall, a Michelin starred restaurant & hotel & popular wedding venue.
Limestone dominates this entire region, shaping not just the landscape but the very identity of this corner of the Lakes. Dramatic geological formations rise from the valley floor. Traditional dry stone walls carve up the pastoral countryside in patterns unchanged for centuries.
From Fieldgate Barn, both the gentler eastern fells and the dramatic central Lakes District beckon explorers. The famous Coast to Coast walk cuts through nearby Shap Village- a pilgrimage route for serious hikers from around the world. Ullswater & Pooley Bridge sparkles just a short drive away, perfect for sailing and swimming on warm summer days. Haweswater Reservoir offers something different entirely; peaceful walks and, when water levels drop, glimpses of the drowned villages of Mardale Green beneath the surface.
Day trips open up endless possibilities including to Keswick, which thrives with outdoor shops and lakeside charm, Windermere draws visitors to England’s largest natural lake, and Scafell Pike rewards those seeking the challenge of scaling England’s highest peak. Even the Yorkshire Dales lie within easy reach, adding yet more variety to your Lake District celebration.

The barn sits within extensive, beautifully landscaped grounds that perfectly complement the historic building and spectacular Lowther Valley setting. Multiple large paved seating areas are scattered throughout the property, providing numerous spots for outdoor relaxation and al fresco dining, while the combination of lawn and field areas offers space for games and activities. A charming feature pond adds tranquillity to the grounds, and the extensive hard-standing parking easily accommodates multiple vehicles, making arrival and departure effortless for large groups.
Additional Information:
Well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. Bed linen is incluced. Personal towels are not provided and guests are asked to bring their own. WiFi and EV Car charger facilities are available. There are ground-floor bedrooms available for those with mobility considerations. Flexible check-in arrangements can be made for group travel.
