Formerly the main farmhouse of the Earls of Portsmouth’s estate, this Grade II listed home is now a private and peaceful retreat for group holidays, family reunions, creative workshops, and milestone celebrations. Inside, you'll find original features such as Georgian arched windows, exposed beams and fireplaces, along with modern comforts and multiple communal spaces. There’s a large kitchen for group catering, elegant dining for 30, and three welcoming sitting rooms, including a cosy snug and log-burning fires.
Located near Chulmleigh in a glorious countryside setting, Eggesford Barton offers doorstep access to the Tarka Trail and Eggesford Forest, with scenic walking and mountain biking routes through woodland and along the River Taw. A private stretch of riverbank is available for fishing and is excellent for spotting the local wildlife, including kingfishers and otters. The nearby Tarka Line runs from Eggesford Station to both Barnstaple and Exeter—a lovely way to explore without needing the car. Spend days browsing Barnstaple’s historic pannier market or visiting Exeter’s cathedral and independent shops. If you’re craving sea air, North Devon’s award-winning beaches, including Croyde and Saunton Sands, are less than an hour away.
Eggesford Barton is designed for relaxed, sociable living. Outside, there’s a grassed courtyard perfect for al fresco dining, a dedicated marquee area for big occasions, and plenty of room for garden games. Indoors, guests of all ages will appreciate the games room with table tennis and a pool table. Outside: 30 acres of private countryside include woodland, pastureland, riverside walks, and ample space for ball games and outdoor play. The grassed courtyard is perfect for al fresco dining or summer evening drinks, and there is a designated marquee area for events and celebrations. Guests have free fishing rights to a private stretch the River Taw (bring your own tackle and waders). Parking for up to 15 cars with an EV charging point.
Additional Information: WiFi, bed linen, bath towels, utilities, an initial supply of logs for the woodburners, and fishing rights are included with the rental of Eggesford Barton. The owner can recommend local providers for additional experiences like clay shooting, archery, yoga, beauty treatments, and craft workshops. Up to four dogs are welcome by arrangement.
