Butterdon is a wonderfully welcoming home-from-home holiday cottage, set in beautiful surroundings on a 50-acre private nature reserve on Dartmoor between the villages of Drewsteignton and Dunsford. The cottage sleeps five guests in two bedrooms and is ideal for families, friends or couples. It's one of three charming Dartmoor holiday cottages on the Clifford Barton Estate. The cottages are beautifully appointed with hand made soft furnishings and real attention to detail. Guests love that the cottage is located in the stunning Dartmoor landscape yet convenient for Exeter and the South Devon Coast.
If you are after an active holiday there is plenty to keep you busy, borrow bikes and cycle into Fingle Woods, onto Dartmoor or along the river path to the Fingle Bridge Inn for cheesy chips. However, those who prefer a less-adrenaline fuelled break will find what they seek here. The tranquil 50-acre nature reserve is home to various birds and wildlife. There is a sheltered timber platform overlooking the lake with a swing seat which is a great place to sit and watch wildlife in the evening or practice some early morning yoga or meditation. There is also the woodland platform if you prefer forest bathing or sitting on one of the reclining chairs listening to the abundance of birds singing away. A great place to use the Merlin bird app. Clifford Barton is dog friendly and your dog will love walks around the lake or in the Teign Valley. Other facilities include the games barn where you can challenge your party to table tennis, table football and snooker. There's also an off grid wood fired hot tub that can be booked out (separate charges apply) for the afternoon/evening, where you can watch the sun set down the Teign Valley, sooth tired walking legs, and enjoy the spectacular starry night sky.
Walking and mountain biking are two of the best ways to immerse yourself in the wild beauty of Dartmoor. Drewsteignton is a tiny village best known for Castle Drogo, the last castle built in England. It's around four miles from Butterdon and a scenic walk beside the River Teign and through Fingle Woods. Why not borrow a bike from the bike pool and go exploring. There is a range of adult and kids bikes, including a Burley trailer for the younger guests. For the more adventurous, you can go climbing up or abseiling down granite tors, wild swimming in the River Teign, or horse riding.
Local attractions include Go Ape and mountain bike trails at Haddon Forest Park, Woodlands and Crealy Adventure Parks and the Dart River Country Park. Discover Exeter's cathedral, shops, cinema, restaurants and nightlife, or throw your deckchair in the car and make your way to the South Devon Coast and beaches like Bigbury and Bantham.
You'll never forget your time at Butterdon whether you're on holiday with your family or with friends staying on another cottage on the estate.
