About Heather Cottage

Heather Cottage is a spacious and comfortable three-bedroom holiday home in the peaceful Cumbrian countryside—perfect for families or friends seeking a relaxed rural break. One of six well-maintained cottages at Long Byres, it’s set on a working farm at Talkin Head near Brampton, with breathtaking views across the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Kids will love seeing the animals and having space to roam, while grown-ups can unwind with a cuppa and a view. The Duke of Cumberland is dog friendly and is a nice hour walk around the hills. With the M6 only a few miles from your door, day trips are simple and stress-free.

Heather Cottage is ideally located for exploring the best of northern England and the Scottish Borders. You’re within easy reach of the Solway Coast, Lake District and Northumberland National Parks, and historic spots like Carlisle, Gretna Green, and Hadrian’s Wall. Back at base, the cottage is warm and welcoming, with all the home comforts families need, including a fully equipped kitchen, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of space to relax after a busy day of adventure.

Talkin Head lies in the north-west corner of the North Pennines AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark—an unspoilt paradise full of wide-open skies and rolling hills. Just two miles away, Talkin Tarn Country Park is a must for active families, offering kayaking, paddleboarding (SUP), rowing boats, bike hire, and accessible walking trails through woods and around the lake. The fantastic Talkin Adventures Activity Centre offers instructor-led outdoor fun for all ages. Nearby Geltsdale RSPB Nature Reserve is great for wildlife watching and peaceful moorland walks. Lowther Castle’s family-friendly adventure playground, Lanercost Priory, and the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre are all within easy driving distance. The Lake District is less than an hour away, and there’s lots to discover in Carlisle—from the castle and museum to shops, restaurants, and soft play for rainy days.

Whether you’re hiking, sightseeing, or simply enjoying time together, Heather Cottage is a welcoming home-from-home that’s just right for a memorable family holiday in Cumbria.
