Alston nestles in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Once described as ‘England’s Last Wilderness’ the North Pennines is an area steeped in history. A wild and rugged landscape with a different view around every corner. Three major rivers the South Tyne, Tees and Wear all rise within the surrounding hills. The C2C cycle route passes through Alston on it’s way from the West to East coast and the Pennine Way long distance footpath also passes through Alston. Footpaths criss cross the area making it ideal for those who wish to leave the car behind and explore the area on foot. Alston is set on a steep partially cobbled street with a variety of independent shops as well as those providing for day to day needs. Cafes, pubs, craft and gift shops offer something for everyone. The Tourist Information centre and library are situated in the Town Hall at the bottom of the main street. The South Tynedale Railway runs a narrow gauge railway from Alston to Slaggyford. Run by volunteers and often steam hauled this makes a lovely outing- or follow the footpath alongside the railway line and beyond. On the road towards Brampton lies the Roman Fort of Epiacum. A unique and unspoiled hill fort skilfully interpreted. Lead Mining has shaped the landscape here and the history of this challenging way of life can be explored at Nenthead or over the hill at Killhope at the head of the Wear Valley. Alston Moor boasts the highest golf course in England - at 1476 ft- 18 holes with spectacular views over the South Tyne valley.
Five roads lead out of Alston giving access in all directions. Just over half an hour will get you over the spectacular Hartside Pass to Penrith and on to the Lake District beyond, or north east to Hexham with it’s beautiful Abbey . North takes you to Brampton passing the RSPB reserve at Geltsdale, or Haltwhistle and Hadrian’s wall. Crossing the moors into Teesdale you will pass the spectacular waterfalls of High Force, passing through Middleton in Teesdale and reaching the lovely town of Barnard Castle where Bowes Museum is well worth a visit.Travelling a little further and you will reach the border city of Carlisle in one direction or Durham or Newcastle in another.
