Bay Watch House is the perfect place for your family gathering or annual holiday with friends. Not only does the house have an enviable location close to the centre of St Ives and within walking distance of shops, cafes and pubs, but it also has fantastic views of Porthmeor Beach and is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate up to 13 people.
St Ives is an incredible holiday destination. Once a quaint fishing village with a busy harbour, it is now a vibrant town with lots on offer at any time of year. There are five beaches within walking distance of the house, the most popular of which is the sandy stretch at Porthmeor which is a favourite with families and surfers. Porthminster is next to the train station, sheltered by the sloping cliffs and benefitting from an excellent cafe, while the other beaches are Harbour Beach, Porthgwidden and Bamaluz beach, the latter of which is only accessible at low tide.
Artists started coming to St Ives in the 1880s, attracted by the beautiful scenery, temperate climate and long hours of daylight. As the fishing industry declined, artists took over the fishermen's workshops and lofts, swapping fishing nets for easels and clay wheels. There are now lots of galleries displaying or selling work by local artists, including the Tate St Ives, the Porthminster Gallery, and the Penwith Gallery which was founded by Barbara Hepworth. Hepworth loved St Ives so much that her family created The Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in her house after her death. Lots of galleries also run workshops so you can develop your artistic skills while on holiday.
The quality of food is another reason people love visiting St Ives. The pilchard industry that once sustained the town may be gone, but you do not have to walk far for a delicious meal of fresh fish, whether you want it wrapped in paper to eat on the beach or served on porcelain plates in a fine dining restaurant. Alternatively, the kitchen at Bay Watch House is very well equipped so stop by a local fishmonger to get their catch of the day, or book a boat trip and catch it yourself! St Ives also has a weekly farmers market every Thursday, selling a wide variety of locally produced food and drink.
St Ives is stunning, and it is easy to appreciate why people visit year after year or even relocate there, seduced by its natural beauty and friendly community. It is as much a destination where you never have to sit still, as it is one where you can spend hours in a recliner, happily watching the view. The space and central location of Bay Watch House make it easy to keep everyone happy with St Michael's Mount, The Eden Project, the outdoor Minack Theatre, Paradise Park and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth being some favourite nearby attractions.
