The Reading Rooms is a stone holiday cottage in Oughtershaw. It was built in the 1800s as a place where a community could gather and share news and retains a welcoming atmosphere that lingers centuries later. The thought that has gone into this renovation is evident in the way the owners have carefully incorporated modern comforts into a traditional rural Yorkshire building. The holiday home sleeps four people in two bedrooms with a lovely kitchen for self-catering and a riverside garden. It's a great house for couples and families.
Oughtershaw is a small village surrounded by gorgeous scenery. Centrally located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it is a fantastic place to stay to reach incredible sights and attractions easily. There isn't much in Oughtershaw. There is a beck, fields, drystone walls, and spectacular views, which can vary from delightful to dramatically desolate but are always breathtaking. Follow the Oughtershaw Beck and the Dales Way west to Cam Rakes, returning via Cocklee Fell for a scenic (but hilly, with 930 feet of climbing) seven-mile walk. The route is just one of countless footpaths and bridleways traversing the Dales.
If you want a holiday full of exciting shops and dynamic nightlife, Oughtershaw is not for you. However, if you want to experience the charm of villages like Buckden and Kettlewell, both used as locations for filming "Calendar Girls", and bustling historic market towns such as Skipton and Grassington, then you will love it. Every day brings something new, whether it's a visit to the Wensleydale Dairy in Hawes, sweeping along a curved mountain road in Swaledale, swimming under a waterfall, or delving into the underground in one of England's most extensive caving systems.
There is something reassuringly solid about a building that has been an integral part of a village for generations. The Reading Rooms has started a new chapter as a self-catering holiday cottage, and staying here allows you to write your name on a page of its history.
