Craster Reach sleeps six people in three bedrooms, but you'll want to reserve the top floor, which has one of the best bedrooms of any holiday cottage on the Northumberland Coast. The mid-terraced property is moments from historic Craster Harbour and the award-winning Jolly Fisherman Inn, which serves lip-smackingly fresh seafood when you want someone to cook for you. Guests rave about the high standard of the self-catering facilities, the peaceful location on a residential street, and how well the layout works for families or friends.
Craster is the sort of place that appeals to all generations. Many visitors have been heading to the charming fishing village, whose smoked kippers are considered a delicacy worldwide. There may be only one smokehouse remaining, but the fish are as delicious as ever. In summer, you can book a fishing trip from the harbour. Northumberland is renowned for the beauty of its coastline, much of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Craster's beach, a mix of sand and shingle, is a haven for sea birds and the occasional seal. Walk north from the cottage along the Northumberland Coastal Path to Dunstanburgh Castle, whose photogenic ruins have graced many postcards.
The Northumberland Coast AONB stretches for 40 miles all the way to Berwick-Upon-Tweed and the border with Scotland. Its boundary has been fiercely contested over the centuries, and this legacy of conflict is evident in the ancient castles of Alnwick and Bamburgh, as well as Dunstanburgh. Look back further than the Saxons and the Scots to Roman occupation and Hadrian's Wall, less than an hour's drive from Craster Reach. Between the two are Holy Island and the Farne Islands. As well as sightseeing, walking and fishing, activities on offer include golf, horseriding, fishing, diving, paddleboarding and surfing.
Far from merely a place to stay, your time at Craster Reach will be intrinsic to your holiday memories. Whatever the season, its warmth and welcome will linger long after you have returned home.
