Located in Warwickshire, Stratford-upon-Avon is best known for being the birthplace of playwright William Shakespeare, but there’s plenty more to discover in this medieval city. Below are some of the top recommendations for how to spend your time when you visit.

Where to Go in Stratford-upon-Avon

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is one of the leading cultural organisations in Stratford-upon-Avon, with several venues across the town all dedicated to preserving the legacy of the famous literary figure. The house where Shakespeare was born and raised is one of the most-visited places in the whole area and is a wonderful attraction for all ages where you can learn more about his life and impact on the world of theatre.

Another top attraction in Stratford-upon-Avon is Anne Hathaway’s cottage, where Shakespeare’s wife lived and was courted by the playwright. It’s now a beautifully preserved example of classic Tudor architecture that is home to original furniture and a beautiful garden with a sculpture trail.

For those less keen on culture, the Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm is the largest tropical attraction in the UK and makes a great day out for families with children. Another nearby highlight is a nature reserve known as Welcombe Hills, which offers lots of green space to run around in or explore on a woodland walk.

What to Do in Stratford-upon-Avon

If you’re in Stratford-upon-Avon and want to really appreciate the work of its most famous figure, seeing a play is one of the best things to do. There are three theatres owned by The Royal Shakespeare Company in the town, all of which have a varied program of events and stage a variety of classic and modern productions.

You can also enjoy the river that gave the town its name by taking a boat trip along the River Avon. Whether you hop on a large cruiser and enjoy a guided tour or hire a pedalo or small boat and row along yourself, it’s a very peaceful way to spend part of a day and see more of the town from the water.

If you enjoy checking out the local produce of the places you visit, Stratford-upon-Avon is home to two markets a week that have a great selection of edible offerings. Take a bag with you and pick up some ingredients for lunch, or just browse the samples on offer and appreciate the high quality of the local flavours.

Best Time to Visit Stratford-upon-Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon is best visited when the weather is warm and dry, which in the UK is between June and September. There are usually lots of events held over the summer holidays in July and August, so whilst this is the busiest time of year to visit it’s also one of the most exciting.
