An area awash with history, the Scottish Borders have been much fought over in conflicts such as the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 13th and 14th centuries. It wasn’t until 1975 that the area now known as the Scottish Borders, was created. As such, you can see evidence of the years of changing ownership in the English and Scottish place names throughout the region.
It isn’t hard to understand why the lush, rolling hills of the Scottish Borders were so fought over. Sweeping valleys, bountiful forests and scenic moorlands filled with heather now provide peaceful, rural surroundings. With an area of 1800 square miles to explore, getting lost in the variety of different scenery the area yields, is a pleasure.
The rich and fascinating history of the area provides plenty of entertainment for those who want to take a trip back in time. There are numerous historical buildings, stately homes and castles to visit. Melrose Abbey is a must-see, where the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce is said to have been laid to rest.
For those more interested in the present day, the gardens and grounds that accompany the historical buildings are a delight to explore.
Those in search of natural forest surrounds have plenty to choose from, such as Glentress Forest, where you can take it at a gentle pace with walking and hiking trails or go full speed ahead on one of the many mountain bike courses that cover the area. With so much spectacular unspoilt natural scenery, the Scottish Borders are alive with wildlife.
A great year-round destination, the Scottish Borders offer a wealth of attractions and amusements to keep you occupied every day of your holiday.
