Bread Oven Cottage is as cosy and welcoming as it sounds. With a heritage dating back more than three centuries, the charming cottage is part of the historic Smailholm Granary between Melrose and Kelso in the stunning Scottish Borders. Beautifully restored and superbly equipped as a holiday cottage for up to four people, Bread Oven Cottage is wonderful in any season. It's ideal as a base from which to see some of the most spectacular scenery in southern Scotland and Northumberland. You're close to ancient towers and castles and only an hour from Edinburgh. The stone property is an appealing blend of character and comfort and, with each bedroom having its own bathroom, is perfect for families, couples or friends either for a holiday or as a home-from-home if you're working in the area.
Less than two miles from Bread Oven Cottage, Smailholm Tower is an iconic Borders sight. The 15th Century Tower has, as do most castles and fortified buildings in the region, a colourful and tragic history. You can walk, cycle or drive to the tower from the cottage. Keen walkers may also wish follow the more challenging eight-mile route from Smailholm to Mellerstain. Other local attractions include Floors Castle, Dryburgh Abbey and the tomb of Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford, the ruins of Melrose Abbey, the orchard and gardens at Priorwood, and the majestic Eildon Hills.
Bread Oven Cottage is an hour from Edinburgh and less than two hours from Glasgow. Easily drivable from the cottage, both are fantastic cities with everything you could wish for in an exciting day out. Smailholm is also around an hour's drive from Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Bamburgh Castle, and Holy Island Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve. Alnwick Castle is another visitor favourite, and there are plenty of opportunities for fishing and golf. Guests who have stayed at Bread Oven Cottage love the location, the garden, and the excellent communication from the owners that helped them to make the most of their self-catering holiday in the Scottish Borders.

Licenced for up to four people, Bread Oven Cottage is also ideal for couples! We offer an all year round discount of £10 per night when two people stay and share a single bedroom (superking double or twin) and ensuite. Generally we have a 3night minimum stay but occasionally we are able to release two night availability. Why not check our availability calendar just in case?
