If you are looking for miles of open coastline with relatively few people Northumberland’s vast sandy beaches of are hard to beat. Ther backdrop of Bamburgh Castle on the infamous Bamburgh Beach offers one of the most iconic coastal views in Britain. The huge expanse of sand is dog friendly all year round, making it a great spot for a long walk whilst enjoying the fantastic views of the sea and castle. The beach is also perfect for a game of frisbee and bat and ball, or if you are feeling up for a dip you can hire paddle boards or try your hand at surfing. If you are looking for something even more secluded the uninterrupted beach at Druridge Bay is perfect for relaxed walks, expansive views and dramatic sunrises. The lakes and nature reserves behind the dunes are a great place to spot otters, birds and other wildlife. Other fantastic beaches include Embleton Bay for its views of Dunstanburgh Castle and Beadnell Bay for watersports.
No visit to Northumberland’s coastline would be complete without visiting some of the charming seaside villages and sampling the fresh seafood on offer. The picturesque village of Alnmouth is known for its colourful houses and large village green which overlooks the estuary where the River Aln meets the North Sea. Lace up your walking boots and take a stroll along the Northumberland Coast Path or head down to the long sandy beach which is backed by sand dunes. Alternatively, visit the small fishing village of Craster with its small harbour and pretty stone cottages dotted along the shoreline. ‘Must dos’ include enjoying the spectacular coastal scenery on the walk to Dunstanburgh Castle and sampling the infamous smoked kippers.
