Living
The Coastguard’s Snug sits in the heart of Craster, one of the best-known fishing villages along the Northumberland coast. Arranged on the ground floor of Coastguard Cottage, this welcoming retreat has been thoughtfully set up for two guests. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with reclaimed timber, exposed brickwork and carefully chosen furnishings adding character without feeling fussy. The main living space is open plan, bringing together the kitchen, dining area and sitting room around a wood-burning stove set into a traditional brick fireplace. It’s the sort of room that invites slow evenings after time outdoors. A king-size bedroom has its own en-suite shower room. Outside the back door there’s a small spot for morning coffee, while a private garden area a short distance away enjoys views across the harbour. The village pub, The Jolly Fisherman, is only a short walk away and well known for its seafood and sea views.
Life in Craster revolves around the harbour. Fishing boats still come and go with the tide, and the scent of smoked kippers from the traditional smokehouses drifts through the village lanes. Visitors quickly fall into the rhythm of the place. A wander down to the harbour wall often turns into an hour watching the waves and seabirds. There’s a small café for coffee and a local gallery in the village. England’s Coastal Path runs directly through Craster, following the clifftops in both directions. Step outside the cottage and you can be walking beside the sea within minutes. The village beach itself is small but atmospheric, framed by rocky shoreline and open sea. Evenings often end with a slow stroll back from the harbour as the light fades over the North Sea.
Further along the coast, Northumberland reveals some of its most striking scenery. The path north from Craster leads to Dunstanburgh Castle, its vast ruins standing high above the sea roughly a mile and a half away. Just a few miles away, the market town of Alnwick is famous for it's castle and gardens and Howick Hall also offers peaceful woodland walks and beautifully kept gardens. The welcoming tea rooms celebrate the Grey family's connection to Earl Grey tea. Sandy beaches appear at regular intervals along this stretch of coastline. Embleton Bay lies a short drive away and spreads wide beneath the castle ruins, while Sugar Sands near Longhoughton offers quieter, wilder scenery backed by dunes. Historic villages, open farmland and miles of coastal walking all sit within easy reach, giving guests plenty of reasons to explore before returning to the calm of Craster and The Coastguard's Snug at the end of the day.
Coastguard’s Snug is part of the larger Coastguard Cottage which sleeps up to 8. Please enquire for larger groups.
