About Hemmel House

Hemmel House is in the quiet village of Dunstan in the Northumberland Coast AONB. There's a village pub, the Cottage Inn, a few minutes' stroll from the door, while Craster is about a mile and Embleton beach about a mile and a half along a pretty bridleway. Though it's a newly built property, the self-catering holiday cottage has been constructed using traditional materials and methods and sits in the landscape as if it's always belonged. It has a large open-plan living area with a vaulted ceiling, underfloor heating, and huge picture windows framing tranquil views over fields to the sea. The layout is perfect for families or friends, as there are three ensuite bedrooms with the option of accommodating an extra child in the study.

Northumberland is famous for its stunning coastline and its plethora of castles like the imposing 14th Century Dunstanburgh Castle, which is about a mile from the house and overlooks the coast between Craster and Embleton. Like all of the castles in Northumberland, it was built as a defensive fortress, protecting residents from marauders coming over the border from Scotland. Other castles within a small radius include Alnwick, Bamburgh, Warkworth and Chillingham. Each has a unique history and makes an excellent destination for a walk or a bike ride. Link them along a stretch of the Coast and Castles Cycle Route encompassing 85 miles of the Northumberland coast. Alnwick Castle will be recognisable to fans of the Harry Potter film franchise as the grounds of Hogwarts. The town has Britain's biggest secondhand bookshop, which is even more reasons for bookworms to visit.

Hemmel House is perfect if you want to escape to your own space and do as little as possible, but it is also ideal if you love being outdoors and exploring as far as you can during the time that you have. Take your binoculars along the coastal footpath to see how many birds you can spot, or book a horse ride along the sand. Bring your SUP, surfboard, kiteboard or kayak, or hire them together with tuition from local companies who want to help you get the most out of your stay. You'll lose count of the number of puffins and seals you'll see on a wildlife boat trip to the Farne Islands, and remember not to get caught by the tide if you drive over the causeway to Holy Island. Other attractions include Howick Hall and Gardens and Cragside House.

Hemmel House is in the grounds of Dunstan Hall, which sleeps 18 people, and near Stable Cottage, which sleeps four people. All are private and self-contained and can be booked independently or together to sleep 29 people if you're planning a family reunion or gathering with friends. The owners can help to make your stay even more memorable by arranging guided photography or history tours, a chef to cater for you or restaurant recommendations.

Accommodation Comprises:

Hemmel House is a newly constructed property built to exacting standards using high-quality materials. Accommodation is over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • Large open plan kitchen/dining and living room, with a vaulted ceiling and oak beams making a beautiful feature. Huge windows fill the open-plan living area with natural light and showcase views over the countryside and coast. There is heating under the slate floors and a wood burner for additional hygge appeal in cold weather. The country kitchen has a quartz-topped island lit by pendant lights, a generously sized American-style fridge/freezer, an induction stove, an integrated oven, and a constant supply of boiling water on tap. Cupboards are well-stocked with plates, glasses, pots, pans and other bits you need for stress-free self-catering. A large dining table seats six, with all guests having fantastic views on both sides and leather seating provides a place to relax after meals.
  • A separate sitting room has a log burner and a TV. It's helpful to have multiple living areas in one house, allowing people to enjoy peace without being isolated.
  • Guests who need to work will appreciate the study, which is accessed via the second living room. This room can also be used as a child's bedroom with a small single bed (child's linen is not provided).
  • Laundry and cleaning facilities are in the utility room. There is also a cloakroom with a WC and a handbasin.
  • Accessible bedroom featuring a king-sized bed, proper storage, and an ensuite wetroom.

Upstairs:

  • A galleried hallway leads to two bedrooms, one being a lovely double with a king-sized bed and an ensuite shower room. Beds are made up for guests' arrival, and bath towels are provided.
  • The third bedroom is a lovely twin room featuring two full-sized single beds. The tiled ensuite has a shower over the bath, WC and a handbasin. A travel cot is available, but guests must bring cot bedding.

Outside: The garden is terraced and enclosed by hedges and fencing. The upper level is wheelchair accessible. There is parking for three cars and an EV charging point (EV charging is complimentary). Bike storage is available on request.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen, bath towels and a supply of logs are included. A travel cot and a highchair are available on request. Smoking and pets are not allowed.
