Emblestone View is a two-bedroom holiday cottage just outside Embleton, set within a small group of converted farm buildings a short walk from the beach. It sleeps four and looks out over open fields towards the sea, with the shoreline only a couple of minutes away on foot. Step outside and you're straight onto the Coast and Castles No 1 cycle route, with Dunstanburgh Castle rising up along the headland. It's a striking view, and one that changes with the light and weather. Inside, the cottage keeps things simple and comfortable rather than overly styled. There's a log burner for cooler evenings, a couple of places to sit with a book, and space to properly switch off after being out all day. The Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel is good for food if you'd rather not cook.
You'll easily feel settled in Embleton. There's a village shop for essentials, a couple of places to eat, and not much in the way of distractions. Most people are here for the coastline, and it more than delivers. The beach is wide and open, backed by dunes, and even in the height of summer, it rarely feels crowded. Dunstanburgh Golf Club runs alongside the shore, so it's not unusual to see walkers, golfers and the odd paddleboarder all sharing the same stretch. If you're up early, it's worth heading down before breakfast when you are likely to have the beach to yourself.
From here, you can head out in either direction without needing much of a plan. Walk south towards Craster, passing beneath the castle ruins and along the headland, then stop for something to eat by the harbour or pick up kippers from the smokehouse. Going the other way takes you along the sand towards Low Newton and The Ship Inn, set just behind the dunes and known for its microbrewery. If you want to go further, the coastline keeps unfolding - Bamburgh with its castle above the beach, or inland to Alnwick Castle and the gardens. Boats run from Seahouses out to the Farne Islands during the season, where you'll see seabirds and seals at close range. It's the kind of area where you can fill your days easily, or just take things slowly and see where you end up.
