City of Stories - Norwich was the first place in England designated as a UNESCO City of Literature, and it is easy to see why this heritage deserves to be protected. Norwich has two universities, and it is also home to the National Centre for Writing. There are lovely independent bookshops like the award-winning Book Hive which is in the Lanes and close to several excellent cafes so you can spend a lazy morning browsing for a new book before enjoying it with coffee.
Medieval Architecture - Did you know that Norwich is the most complete medieval city in Britain? It also held the status as Britain’s most important city outside of London for most of the 1700s due to the wealth it generated from trade and industry. These centuries of prosperity mean that the city’s architecture is beautiful and fascinating, with stunning buildings ranging from the magnificent Norman cathedral to the Medieval Guildhall and houses along Elm Hill, Tudor buildings and a beautiful Georgian Assembly Hall. Don’t miss seeing Norwich Castle, now home to an excellent museum and art gallery. After all of that walking, stop by the Gardeners Arms, locally called The Murderers, which has been serving beer since 1530.
Visitors who want to get under the skin of the city and see a side of it few are lucky enough to see should book a tour underneath the KindaKafe.
Shopping in Norwich - There has been a regular market in Norwich since Saxon times, although it was the Normans who laid out the current market square. Nearly 200 stalls sell everything from flowers to footwear every Monday to Saturday, with a smaller selection of stallholders also operating on Sunday. In addition to the market, Norwich has an excellent variety of independent retailers and High Street shops as well as two shopping centres. The main shopping areas focus around The Lanes, Cathedral Quarter and Magdalene Street, with more shops around Timberhill, Elm Hill, The Royal Arcade and Upper St Giles.
Norwich Attractions - There is lots to do in Norwich. Let off some steam in the Rage Rooms, stroll around the Plantation Garden or take in a show at the Norwich Playhouse, Norwich Theatre Royal or the Puppet Theatre.
Day Trips from Norwich - Although there is more than enough to keep you busy in Norwich, you will not regret making time to explore outside of the city as well. If you are short on time, then a walk or bike ride along the 26-mile Marriott’s Way will showcase the beauty of the countryside between Norwich and the market town of Aylsham.
Those with time at their disposal will love having the opportunity to discover other parts of Norfolk. The Broads National Park is just east of the city, in between Norwich and the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, and the protected environment is perfect for bird watching, sailing and fishing. Alternatively, head 20 miles north to Cromer for more traditional seaside fun and fantastic local lobster and crab. Golf is a favourite pastime, and there are a dozen golf courses within a 25-minute radius of the city.
Norwich has been welcoming visitors for millennia and remains a fantastic choice for a short break or an extended holiday.
