Woodlands Cottage is a charming property in the grounds of a former Victorian vicarage, previously the stables. Situated in the Northern Fells village of Ireby, close to Cockermouth and Keswick and within touching distance of the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. It's the perfect place where couples or small families can retreat from the stress and distractions of daily life. Enjoy the pure pleasure of relaxing after a day of walking, mountain biking or sightseeing with your feet up in front of the log burner or with a pint of local beer (that has been brewed in the neighbouring village of Hesket Newmarket) right next door in Woodlands House.
It doesn't matter what time of year you visit Cumbria and the Lake District, because there is always something amazing to see and fun to do. Walking is one of the most popular activities, with the incredible scenery drawing thousands of visitors to climb its mountains and traverse its fells. Every twist of the trail opens up another astonishing view, and there is an excellent network of footpaths to suit all abilities. Walks from the cottage lead to nearby High Ireby, Torpenhow, Uldale, Boltongate and Caldbeck, as well as Binsey, one of the lowest of the Wainwright fells but with truly rewarding views.
There is also a fantastic choice of road and mountain bike trails for cyclists. Other ways to have fun outdoors include fishing, golf, sailing, kayaking, climbing and abseiling - you're only limited by your imagination and your energy level!
Day trips can include sunning yourself on the beautiful Solway Coast AONB at beaches like Mawbray Banks, Allonby or St Bees (the start of the Wainwright Coast to Coast walking and cycling route). Bassenthwaite is under five miles from the cottage, as is the Lakes Distillery, along with Buttermere, Grasmere, Crummock Water, Loweswater and a host of other popular Lake District beauty spots are within a 30-minute drive. Keswick and Cockermouth both have an excellent variety of places to eat, drink and shop, as well as museums and other attractions. Carlisle is easy to reach, and visitors can also see Hadrian's Wall, Whinlatter Forest, Wordsworth House, the Ullswater Steamer, and the Honister Slate Mine.
Woodlands Cottage is a wonderful year-round place to escape and unwind, enjoying the stunning views and attractions for which Cumbria and the Lake District are famed.
