About The Old Post Office

The Old Post Office is a light and spacious self-catering cottage in the western Lake District, within walking distance of Ennerdale Water and close to the family-friendly Shepherds Arms pub.  The Old Post Office is great for groups and also for large families going away together, as the property sleeps up to 13 people , across 6 bedrooms.  We have added a large new shower room (off the ground floor bedroom, & suitable for any guests who don't want stairs). There also is the large bathroom on the 1st floor. This comfortable accommodation and fantastic location make it the perfect place for families and friends to have a relaxing holiday in a beautiful setting. We own the field at the rear, and a section has the grass mown and we have benches there, and is for the sole use for this guests staying at our property.  There is off road parking by the house, plus additional safe parking in the village, if a group arrive with quite a few cars.

Ennerdale Bridge is ideally located for exploring the Western Lakes and the Cumbrian Coast. While hoards of visitors flock to better-known lakes like Windermere and Bassenthwaite you can enjoy the peaceful shores of Ennerdale Water just one mile from the cottage. The lake has a wonderful sense of tranquillity as there is no public road within earshot. It is a haven not only for walkers who want to escape the noise and bustle of their daily lives but also for the birds and wildlife that live there.

One of the biggest draws of the Lake District National Park is the fantastic footpaths that make it possible to immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape. There is a good choice of routes to suit every ability from short, flat routes around the lake to the more challenging 182-mile Coast-to-Coast footpath created by the Lake District's most beloved explorer, Alfred Wainwright. The area is also excellent for cycling and mountain bikers. The views from the peaks on both sides of Ennerdale valley are exceptional. There is also a very enjoyable assortment of walks on easier paths on various stretches of the Lake, and various car parks around Ennerdale Water.

Attractions nearby include:

  • Buttermere and Crummock Water, both of which are stunningly picturesque in every season.
  • Loweswater which, despite appearing in the "Miss Potter" film, remains something of a hidden gem, undiscovered by most tourists.
  • England's highest peak and deepest lake at Scafell and Wastwater.
  • Eskdale and the historic Ravenglass to Eskdale railway.
  • Cockermouth with its vibrant market and status as the birthplace of William Wordsworth.
  • Muncaster Castle.
  • The sandy beach of St Bees.

The Old Post Office can be booked together with its sister cottage next door to accommodate larger groups. Find out more by clicking through to the owner's website.
