Rivendell is a superb holiday home in a stunning location with jaw-dropping views of Skiddaw and the surrounding fells. Although it is close to some of the Lake District's favourite sights and attractions, it is off the well-trodden tourist trail and is in the quiet rural village of Bassenthwaite and within walking distance of the welcoming Sun Inn pub. Rivendell sleeps six people in three bedrooms and is pet-friendly, so it's ideal for families or friends.
Bassenthwaite is a typically English country village. In addition to the popular pub, a social hub for the community, there is a church, a school, a proper village green, and a pretty stream with lots of seating where you can sit and watch the resident ducks. It only takes 15 minutes to walk from the cottage to the fells above the village, making it simple to soak up the beauty of the landscape. The variety of local walking routes varies from a gentle stroll by the lake to all-day walks and challenging routes through the fells. Local trails include those through Dodd Wood, around Bassenthwaite Lake, and to Walla Crag, Spout Force and Darling How Plantation. You can walk up Skiddaw via Longside Edge and Ullock Pike or from Birkett Edge and Bakestall. It's a landscape that everyone can enjoy whether you've just bought your first pair of hiking boots or you're an accomplished fell walker.
The Lake District is heaven for mountain bikers and hikers, especially the trails in Whinlatter Forest and the Skiddaw Loop. The Keswick Dismantled Railway is flat and mainly traffic-free and perfect for families and less confident cyclists. Other ways to have fun include the Go Ape high rope courses at Whinlatter Forest, swimming, sailing or fishing on Bassenthwaite Lake, visiting the animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park and the Deer Park at Armathwaite Hall. Keswick is only 15 minutes from Rivendell, with a wide array of amenities that include a twice-weekly market. Penrith is 30-minutes by car from the cottage, while Ambleside and the southern lakes are only a few minutes further.
No matter how many times you visit the Lake District, you'll never feel like you've seen everything. Its views change with the weather and the season, so it always has something new to offer visitors.
