About Rivendell

Rivendell is a superb holiday home in a stunning location with jaw-dropping views of Skiddaw and the surrounding fells. Although it is close to some of the Lake District's favourite sights and attractions, it is off the well-trodden tourist trail and is in the quiet rural village of Bassenthwaite and within walking distance of the welcoming Sun Inn pub. Rivendell sleeps six people in three bedrooms and is pet-friendly, so it's ideal for families or friends.

Bassenthwaite is a typically English country village. In addition to the popular pub, a social hub for the community, there is a church, a school, a proper village green, and a pretty stream with lots of seating where you can sit and watch the resident ducks. It only takes 15 minutes to walk from the cottage to the fells above the village, making it simple to soak up the beauty of the landscape. The variety of local walking routes varies from a gentle stroll by the lake to all-day walks and challenging routes through the fells. Local trails include those through Dodd Wood, around Bassenthwaite Lake, and to Walla Crag, Spout Force and Darling How Plantation. You can walk up Skiddaw via Longside Edge and Ullock Pike or from Birkett Edge and Bakestall. It's a landscape that everyone can enjoy whether you've just bought your first pair of hiking boots or you're an accomplished fell walker.

The Lake District is heaven for mountain bikers and hikers, especially the trails in Whinlatter Forest and the Skiddaw Loop. The Keswick Dismantled Railway is flat and mainly traffic-free and perfect for families and less confident cyclists. Other ways to have fun include the Go Ape high rope courses at Whinlatter Forest, swimming, sailing or fishing on Bassenthwaite Lake, visiting the animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park and the Deer Park at Armathwaite Hall. Keswick is only 15 minutes from Rivendell, with a wide array of amenities that include a twice-weekly market. Penrith is 30-minutes by car from the cottage, while Ambleside and the southern lakes are only a few minutes further.

No matter how many times you visit the Lake District, you'll never feel like you've seen everything. Its views change with the weather and the season, so it always has something new to offer visitors.

Location (The Lake District)

Accommodation Comprises:

Rivendell Cottage is a former farmhouse that has been renovated and modernised to provide a high standard of accommodation over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • You'll almost wish for cold weather so that you can light the log burner and snuggle up on the sofa after a day walking through the fells. Set up a board game, grab a book from one of many on the shelves, or put on a film. It's a pleasure to spend time in this relaxing environment.
  • Feed your family fantastic meals from the well-equipped kitchen which features a dishwasher, modern oven and stove plus an Aga which is not working and a nice feature for decorative purposes. There's no need to eat off your lap, unless you want to. The cottage has a separate dining area with a solid pine table that seats six people.
  • A separate games area gives the kids somewhere to let off steam without getting underfoot.
  • Utility room with laundry facilities and space to dry boots and coats.

Upstairs:

  • Stairs lead to the first floor where there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Original oak beams are a lovely feature upstairs and down, adding to the cosy atmosphere.
  • Huge bedroom with a double bed, triple aspect windows, and proper storage.
  • Second bedroom with a double bed, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers.
  • Twin room with two single beds and built-in storage. All beds are made up for guests arrival.
  • Shower room with a large shower, heated towel rail, WC and a handbasin.
  • Bathroom with a bath, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: The enclosed garden has a lawn, mature plants, and a patio with garden furniture. There is secure storage for bikes and parking for six cars, as well as a summer house with a selection of games, seating and table.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and towels are all provided. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome with an additional surcharge. Short breaks are possible apart from during July and August. Smoking is not permitted.
