Larchside offers something that can be surprisingly difficult to find around Windermere: a peaceful setting that still leaves you within easy reach of everything people come to the Lake District to enjoy. Sleeping two guests, this spacious ground-floor apartment forms part of a traditional Lakeland house on the hillside near Bowness-on-Windermere. Views stretch across the surrounding countryside towards Lake Windermere, while the nearest pubs, cafés, restaurants and lake activities are only a short drive away. The Brown Horse, Winster and the Mason's Arms at Strawberry Bank are both popular choices for a meal out, while Bowness provides everything from lakeside restaurants to independent shops and cosy cafés. Back at Larchside, guests can enjoy a slower pace, whether that's breakfast on the patio, a quiet evening after a day on the fells, or simply watching the changing weather as it moves across the landscape.
Windermere remains one of the Lake District's best-loved destinations for good reason. Lake cruises leave regularly from Bowness, offering a completely different perspective of England's largest lake. Visitors can hire rowing boats, kayaks and paddleboards, take a trip aboard the famous steamers, or follow lakeside paths towards Brockhole and Ambleside. Walkers are spoiled for choice, with routes ranging from gentle shoreline strolls to challenging days on the higher fells. Orrest Head, Brant Fell and School Knott all give rewarding views without requiring a full day's expedition. Beatrix Potter's former home at Hill Top, the World of Beatrix Potter attraction and Blackwell Arts & Crafts House are all nearby, while cyclists can explore quiet country lanes and dedicated trails around the southern lakes.
The wider Lake District opens up easily from here. Ambleside, Grasmere and Hawkshead each have their own character, from historic streets and traditional pubs to galleries, independent shops and famous gingerbread. Coniston Water offers quieter waterside walks, while Ullswater is home to the heritage Ullswater Steamers and some of the National Park's most dramatic scenery. A little further north, Keswick provides excellent shopping, theatre, outdoor activities and access to Derwentwater. Closer to home, visitors can spend a day wandering around the gardens at Holker Hall, explore Kendal Castle and museums, or simply follow whichever road looks most appealing and discover a hidden tarn, a village tea room, or a panoramic viewpoint. That's often when the Lake District is at its best.
