As you park up outside the Cow House with its solid limestone walls, you might just be wondering where you've come to.
But this farmstead of Castlehowe Scar has been here since at least the 17th Century with a date stone over the main farmhouse of 1688. We are located on a ridge of limestone at 1000' , so it may help to bring both sunscreen and waterproofs. The Cow House is a warm, hopefully elegant space with barn slit windows on the south side and the French window to the east overlooking the fells. Within a five minute walk along the [at times busy with tractors] lane, you are on common land - unfenced roads winding over fells full of Swaledale and Dalesbred sheep.
We live in the main house over the yard but will only be on hand to help/advise if you need it - in other words, we don't come bothering you.
We lie on the eastern edge of the newly designated Westmorland Dales extension to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and within our parish of Crosby Ravensworth we have pretty villages, community owned pub, walks forever. To the west beyond Shap is the much busier Lake District National Park with Pooley Bridge/Ullswater only 30 minutes away. Apparently folk even wild swim there! Carlise with its fab Cathedral, Tullie House museum and Roman archaeology is 40 minutes north , almost on the Scottish Border.
The market towns of Appleby in Westmorland, Sedbergh, Penrith and Kirkby Stephen are only a 20-30 minute drive. The Coast to Coast LDPath passes within 1.5 miles of your door and cycle trails abound. If dining out is your bag, there is the George and Dragon at Clifton [15 minutes], the Askham Arms at ...errrr Askham or the swankier Another Place on Ullswater, 30 minutes away. Also our wonderful community owned-pub 10 minutes away.
This really is a little- known gem of an area and we look forward to your discovering it too.

The Cow House is a conversion of an 18th C 'coo hoose'. It was completed in 2015, all one a level with a large living/sitting area with woodburner, kitchen at one end, utility separate area with an extra loo, then a large bathroom and a not -small bedroom with a super-king bed.
In the sitting area is a two seater sofa with a cow -hide footstool plus a Heals' easy chair looking though the French window over the fell. The woodburner may not be necessary as the CH is efficient, but is always welcome with our generous supply of kiln - dried wood.
The wifi is perfectly adequate though not urban super-fast.
There are two tables - a glass one for kitchen suppers and my family 19th C oak gate-legged table - great for jigsaws!
We have a selection of local history books, maps and general interest. You may well find you need your bins as we have red squirrel, buzzard, Kestrel and even Curlew and Lapwing from March.
The kitchen has all you will need - oven with hob and fan, fridge, dishwasher, crockery, pans, well -stocked drawers.
The utility room houses the washing machine, freezer, microwave, drying space and extra loo.
Then comes the large bathroom with Bette deep and wide bath, a further loo, basin and walk -in shower. Our towels are plentiful and there is a vertical radiator.
Finally at the end is the bedroom, with a lovely Heal's super-king bed, high quality cotton bedlinen, feather duvet and/or silk blanket. There is also an Oka wardrobe, chest of drawers [obviously Bobby from Ikea!], a Bone chair and a TV.
