Living
The New Hobbit is a large, private house set in open countryside just outside Sowerby Bridge, offering exclusive use for groups who want space, privacy and flexibility in one place. The former hotel is located in the Ryburn Valley, with surrounding hills and open land, offering long views in most directions. It sleeps up to 44 guests across 15 en-suite bedrooms, with further accommodation nearby available for groups requiring additional capacity. There are no shared facilities and no other guests on site, which makes a noticeable difference to how the house feels once everyone has arrived and settled in.
Inside, the scale of the building is immediately apparent, but it never feels impersonal. Large windows bring daylight into the main rooms, softening the size of the spaces and creating a relaxed atmosphere during the day. Décor throughout is calm and unfussy, using neutral colours, natural finishes and simple furnishings that don’t compete for attention. In the evenings, the lighting shifts the mood, with lamps and softer pools of light making the house feel warmer and more enclosed. It is easy for a group to be together here without feeling on display, and just as easy to step away into a quieter corner when needed.
Catering and dining are well-suited to organised group stays and events. The commercial-style kitchen is practical and spacious, with ample work surfaces, large ovens, fridge and freezer, cookware, crockery and glassware, allowing multiple people or professional caterers to work comfortably at once. Next door, the dining and function room seats up to 100 guests and is finished in light, neutral tones with wood-effect flooring and mirrored walls. This flexible space works equally well for celebratory meals, weddings, meetings or retreat sessions. Outside, the house opens onto a private hillside setting with a hot tub, stone BBQ and rustic seating, while open countryside views to the front offer a quieter contrast. On-site parking is available for over 20 cars.
Beyond the property, the location offers a balance of rural setting and easy access to nearby towns and attractions. Canal-side walks, moorland paths and countryside routes can be picked up close to the house, while Sowerby Bridge provides shops, pubs and transport links a short drive away. Hebden Bridge and Halifax are both easily reached for independent shopping, markets, food, cultural venues and events, with further options across Calderdale for walking, heritage sites and days out. This combination of seclusion and connectivity makes The New Hobbit a practical base for longer stays, events and group breaks that want more than just the house itself.
