Aitken House is a splendid house set back from a quiet residential road in the peaceful village of Millhouse Green. Dating from 1920, it is beautifully restored to sleep up to 10 guests in five gorgeous bedrooms, with accommodation over three levels and a layout that is ideal for families, extended families and friends. The welcoming pub, Huntsman Inn, is a few minutes walk from the gate, as is the well-stocked village shop where you can pick up forgotten essentials. There is also a café in the village where you can enjoy a freshly baked bun and a cup of tea.
Millhouse Green is a pretty village close to the River Don and only two miles from the Peak District National Park. Walking and cycling are both favourite ways to explore, and there is a lovely route following the Trans Pennine Trail through fields and beside the river to the village of Thurlstone and the market town of Penistone. Take time to enjoy Penistone's independent shops, cafes and pubs, stopping by Oak Barn on Thursday or Saturday for the thriving market. The town also boasts a cinema that has been screening films since 1913 and is one of the oldest operational cinemas in the country. Holmfirth is also lovely for a day out, especially if you're a fan of "Last of the Summer Wine" which was filmed in and around the village.
There is a wealth of fantastic local footpaths offering gorgeous views in every season, including routes over Green Moor, through the Fox Valley, and around the More Hall and Broomhead Reservoirs in the Ewden Valley. With the national park virtually on the doorstep, you'll never run short of ideas for walking, cycling, or touring beauty spots in the car. Visitors who want to alternate the delights of the country with the excitement of the city can spend a day shopping and sightseeing in Manchester, Leeds or Sheffield.
Aitken House is a favourite with guests who love being outdoors and active from dawn until dusk, yet it is also popular with groups who just want to relax with a good book or a glass of wine in the hot tub. The area is fortunate to have a wide choice of excellent pubs, charming towns and villages, and beauty spots that will take your breath away. The house has its own games room and an outdoor six-seater hot tub so your stay can be as relaxing or adventurous as you choose.
