Holiday in the Brecon Beacons

Proudly showcasing the highest mountain in South Wales – Pen Y Fan, which stands at 2907 feet, the Brecon Beacons is a superb area for walking, hiking and cycling fans. Choose from countless routes, including the famous Taff Trail – a long-distance favourite among cycling enthusiasts. There are plenty of gentler options for recreation too. Take beautiful walks or horse rides through valleys dotted with iconic Welsh mountain ponies and sheep, past glistening lakes and remote reservoirs, or even pub-to-pub for the truly leisurely option! The waterfalls are a must-see, such as the impressive 90 foot Henrhyd Waterfall on the Southern Edge of the National Park and Ystradfellte in the Fforest Fawr area.

After exploring the vast open spaces of the Brecon Beacons National Park, you can move on to some more enclosed ones in the many fascinating cave systems - the perfect thing to do on a rainy day! The area boasts some of the most extensive and important cave systems in Europe. The National Showcaves Centre for Wales is well worth a visit and a big hit for kids, with guided tours of some of the best-known caves.

The area dates back to Neolithic times and has remnants from the Iron and Bronze Ages, such as the fascinating burial Cairns to the West of the Park. There are plenty of historical buildings to visit, such as the former fortress that is Abergavenny Castle. Railway enthusiasts will also find themselves in their element with some of the most scenic steam train routes in Wales, such as the Brecon Mountain Railway in Merthyr Tydfil.

The Brecon Beacons is an extremely popular UK holiday spot and a top destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities - after one visit, it is easy to see why. For more information see our guide on things to do in the Brecon Beacons.
