Westholme sits quietly in the small village of Thwaite in Upper Swaledale, one of those places where life moves at a gentler pace. This traditional Yorkshire Dales holiday cottage sleeps 4 guests across 2 bedrooms and welcomes dogs as warmly as their owners. It's the kind of place you return to after a long walk, kick off your boots and light the fire without a second thought. The Pennine Way passes just yards from the door, so you can head straight out each morning without needing to plan a route. There's a friendly, dog-welcoming pub and tearooms within walking distance, which tends to become part of the daily rhythm.
Thwaite itself is small and unspoilt, with stone cottages, open green space and views which change with the weather. It's a village where you notice the sound of the river, the change in light falling across the hills and the occasional passing walker stopping to check their map. Nearby Muker adds a little more bustle with its village shop, café and gallery, while Keld offers access to some of the Dales' best-known waterfalls. Hawes is about a 20-minute drive and is the main hub for this part of the Dales, with independent shops, bakeries and the well-known Wensleydale Creamery.
Beyond the village, Swaledale opens up into one of the most striking landscapes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Walking routes stretch in every direction, from gentle riverside paths to more challenging climbs up Great Shunner Fell or Kisdon. The Buttertubs Pass is a memorable drive, winding through limestone scenery that feels practically otherworldly in places. Waterfalls such as Kisdon Force and Wain Wath Falls are close by, along with the wildflower-filled Muker Meadows in early summer. Further afield, you've got classic Dales highlights like Aysgarth Falls, Malham Cove and Bolton Castle, all within easy reach for a day out. It’s a place that rewards slowing down, getting outside and seeing where the day takes you.
