Moss View Cottage is in the tiny hamlet of Oughtershaw, right in the quieter folds of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This 17th-century cottage sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms and welcomes dogs, and is a wonderfully relaxed base for couples and families who prefer open space to busy villages. The Dales Way passes right by the cottage, so walking routes start the moment you step outside. There's a hot tub tucked into the garden overlooking the beck, which becomes a favourite spot at the end of the day. Families can also enjoy the neighbouring small family-run farm, where you might meet some friendly resident animals too.
Oughtershaw itself is more of a scattering of buildings than a traditional village, which is part of its appeal. Life here is simple and outdoors-focused. Hawes is the nearest town, about a 20-minute drive, and offers a good mix of independent shops, cafés and pubs, along with the Wensleydale Creamery. It’s the place to stock up, have a wander or stop for lunch before heading back into the hills. You'll also find small farms nearby, adding to that sense of being properly in the countryside rather than just visiting it.
The wider area is all about big skies, open moorland and long-distance walking. Fleet Moss is close by, one of the highest roads in Yorkshire, with views that stretch for miles on a clear day. From the cottage, you can head out across Oughtershaw Moor or follow forest tracks through quieter parts of the Dales that many visitors never reach. Waterfalls, limestone scenery and winding valley roads are all within easy driving distance. Hawes, Buckden and Kettlewell each offer something slightly different, from cafés to traditional pubs. This part of the Dales feels less polished than some of the more visited spots, which is exactly why people come here.
