Dyer’s Cottage is beautifully presented throughout and provides self-catering to a high standard of comfort and style with lots of character features. Sleeping two or three guests (there is a sofa bed for extra guest and cot), the cottage is perfect for singles, small families and couples on holiday looking for a base from which to explore Yorkshire's many attractions, as well as visiting relatives/friends and those away on business.
Dating back to the 17th century, Dyer's is a much loved cottage which has been in the family for over 250 years. It is sandwiched between Halifax and the Yorkshire market town of Sowerby Bridge (where the Rochdale Canal and Calder and Hebble Navigation meet) which were both used in the filming of the popular television programmes 'Happy Valley' and 'Last Tango in Halifax'. The local area was also used in the filming of 'Gentleman Jack' with Dyer's Cottage just 4-miles from Shibden Hall (where Anne Lister lived) and only a short stroll from the cobbled streets where some of the carriage scenes were shot.
Sitting in the Calderdale Valley within West Yorkshire, Dyer's Cottage is within easy reach of Leeds, Manchester, Halifax, and also the South Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales and Bronte Country. It has good public transport links, allowing you to get out and explore without the use of a car.
An excellent base to discover Yorkshire's fascinating heritage and many attractions, there are plenty of great day trips out. Visit Wainhouse Tower (restricted opening times) and climb the steps of the world's highest folly which will reward in spectacular views. Take the kids to Eureka National Children's Museum in Halifax for some interactional education (a great way to learn through play), and visit The Piece Hall right in the heart of Halifax with its shops to browse and eateries. Bankfield Museum in Boothtown (just outside Halifax centre) is a great all weather attraction with lovely parkland and a fascinating regimental museum with textile and jewellery galleries, a toy section and much more.
For those who like to keep active, explore the Calderdale Way fifty mile footpath; or cycle/walk the Rochdale Canal. There are also pretty villages and towns to explore including: the quirky market town of Hebden with its twice weekly market (on a Saturday and Wednesday); Heptonstall with its quaint cobbled streets; Luddenden; Ripponden with its ancient packhorse bridge; Mytholmroyd with its antique centre. Haworth village (home to the Bronte family) is another popular and interesting day out, or take a nostalgic trip on the Worth Valley Steam Railway (made famous by 'The Railway Children' films) which runs steam and diesel trains from Keighley Station. Skipton and its castle and Ilkley are both about an hour away.
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park for art lovers is just forty minutes away, and for those happy to travel slightly further, Yorkshire and Lancashire's stunning coastlines are two hours and the bustling historic city of York is slightly less.
Dyer's Cottage is well situated for public transport being on a bus route and just 1 mile from Sowerby Bridge railway station and 2 miles from Halifax station.
Please be aware that Calderdale is rather hilly.
