About Overdale Cottage

Overdale Cottage is not just a place to stay while on holiday in Yorkshire, it is a haven where you can rest and recharge, and spend time with the people you love best. The pretty stone cottage is set back from a quiet road in Harome, close to Helmsley and the North York Moors National Park. Refurbished in 2018, there is space for four people to sleep in two bedrooms, and it is pet-friendly, so you do not have to leave behind your four-legged family members when you go on holiday. With beautiful countryside views and two excellent pubs, the Star Inn and The Pheasant, within walking distance, Overdale Cottage is ideal for families and couples.

Harome is in a fantastic location for exploring Yorkshire. In addition to its excellent pubs, the friendly community has an attractive Victorian church which is a particular favourite with couples planning a wedding in the countryside. Stroll down the main street and admire the thatched stone cottages, duck pond and cricket pitch. If you want to see more of the countryside, there is a three-mile circular walk that starts at the Star Inn and goes north to Harome Heads Farm and crosses the River Riccal, or walk to Rievaulx Abbey where you can join the long-distance Cleveland Way footpath. The Inn Way and the Ebor Way also pass close to the village.

Cyclists have a wealth of road routes and off-road trails to enjoy, including the Bransdale Loop which runs through Harome and takes in Kirkbymoorside, Gillamore and Wombleton. Use the path to reach Helmsley, which is only three miles from Overdale Cottage. The market town has some fantastic independent shops and boutiques, many of which are owned and run by local families, as well as a variety of places to eat and drink. Explore the ruins of the medieval Helmsley Castle, book a tour and tasting at the brewery, or admire the collection of magnificent birds that live at the National Centre for Birds of Prey. There is also a beautiful walled garden which is open daily from Easter to the end of October. Historic Helmsley Garden was planted in 1759 and is known for its impressive collection of clematis, as well as its excellent tea shop.

In addition to being close to Helmsley and only a few short miles from the North York Moors National Park and Duncombe Park National Nature Reserve, Overdale is also only 25 miles north of the historic city of York. York is a fantastic choice for a day out, with its stunning Minster, the medieval castle keep, thick city walls, and museums that include the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. Scare yourself silly at the York Dungeon, or frighten your wallet with the fantastic shopping on offer.

If the weather is sunny, or you just fancy a change of scene, Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hood’s Bay are all an option, or take a detour and visit Goathland, which was the filming location for “Heartbeat”, and where the train station doubled as Hogsmeade station in the first Harry Potter film. Children will love pretending that they are on their way to a term at Hogwarts with a trip on the North York Moors Steam Railway which runs from nearby Pickering to Whitby along the coast.

Overdale Cottage blends modern luxuries with tradition character, making it perfect for your self-catering holiday in Yorkshire.

Location (The North York Moors)

Accommodation Comprises:

Overdale Cottage is a traditional stone dwelling that has been sympathetically updated to offer a warm Yorkshire welcome.

Downstairs:

  • The sitting room benefits from a proper fireplace with a real open fire - bliss for warming feet chilled from a brisk winter walk, or for toasting crumpets to eat with a steaming mug of Yorkshire tea. There is space to spread out on the Ekornes Stressless Voyage chairs and leather sofa, either chatting as you enjoy a glass of wine in the evening or watching a favourite film on the TV with DVD player.
  • The country style kitchen is fully equipped with good-quality appliances that include a dishwasher and electric oven and hob, and there is also a washing machine for guest use. The kitchen window looks out on the spacious garden at the rear of the property so that you can keep an eye on the kids and pets while you are cooking.
  • A separate dining room has a oak-topped dining table that is perfect for lazy breakfasts and relaxed family meals. A cosy corner features a two-seater leather sofa where you can escape and read (or nap) in peace.
  • Also downstairs is a cloakroom with WC and handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • The master bedroom has a very comfortable king-sized bed and lovely countryside and village views. As with the rest of the house, it is furnished to a very high standard and there is ample storage.
  • A second bedroom has two single beds and is decorated in a style that makes it suitable for guests of any age. It also benefits from lovely views and good storage.
  • The family bathroom has a deep bath with a Grohe shower above, WC and handbasin.

Outside: The large back garden is secure for children and pets and ideal for running around and playing ball games. Patio furniture and a barbeque will help you make the most of good weather and the lovely views. There is a gravelled area at the front of the cottage which can be used for parking and is also secure for pets.

Additional Information: All utilities, except logs for the fire are included in the cost of hire, as are sheets and towels and WIFI. The cottage has oil-fired central heating. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability, and the owner offers a discount for single guests and couples. Well-behaved pets are welcome with prior agreement from the owner. Smoking is not allowed in the property.
