About The Wheelhouse at Staveley

The Wheelhouse at Staveley sleeps up to six guests and is a unique Lakeland holiday home with the benefit of its very own sauna. Beautifully presented throughout, The Wheelhouse sits in the bustling village of Staveley in Cumbria. Situated close to a renowned stone retailer, as well as a good range of small businesses, The Wheelhouse at Staveley is right in the heart of it all, and just a few minutes walk to the train station, an excellent chip shop, friendly cafe, artisan bakery, the Hawkshead Brewery and Beer Hall, and the Eagle and Child pub which has an open fire.

Both the Wheelhouse at Staveley and the Weslyan Methodist Church were skilfully converted a few years back into a welcoming holiday let (the former) and residential homes (the latter). The Wheelhouse at Staveley sits to the side of a small industrial site (please note that there may be some deliveries and vehicle movements, mainly during working hours during the week) and provides ample space for relaxing with three bedrooms.

The property is as popular with friends meeting up for a holiday as it is for families who want a central base for exploring the beautiful Lake District National Park.

Staveley is on the River Kent, four miles north-west of Kendal. It has a vibrant, friendly community who are welcoming and happy to share their local knowledge with visitors who are searching for a genuine Cumbrian experience rather than merely scratching the surface of the amazing landscape and all it has to offer. The village boasts an enormous bike shop, Wheelbase, where you can hire bikes and shop from a wide range of road and mountain bike clothing and accessories. There is nowhere better to ask about the best trails to suit your ability.

The four-mile drive to Kendal takes around ten minutes, but you can also cycle, or walk along the footpath which runs beside the River Kent and through Burneside village. Kendal is a bustling market town with an artistic feel. There are excellent shops, cafes and pubs, and it is a top choice for a day out. The Kendal Museum is one of the oldest in the UK and a great place to find out more about the history of the landscape, while the Museum of Lakeland Life can show you how people have thrived here for centuries.

Staveley perfectly placed for exploring the whole Lake District, and is only five miles from Bowness-on-Windermere, which has been a hugely popular tourist destination since the mid-1800s and is graced by some lovely Victorian buildings. A good way to spend a day is on a hop-on, hop-off boat trip to Ambleside, Brockhole and Lakeside. Many visitors come to Bowness for the World of Beatrix Potter, and the town also has a beautiful church dating from the late 1400s, the vintage Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, and the Windermere Steamboat Museum.

One of the best features of The Wheelhouse at Staveley is that it caters so well for guests who want to spend their days outside, yet is very warm, comfortable and welcoming on their return. Not only does it have a secure lockup for bikes or prams, but it also has two modern shower rooms and a luxurious sauna where you can ease your aching muscles after a good day’s walking or cycling so that you are ready to do it all again the next day!

Location (The Lake District)

The Wheelhouse was designed with holidaymakers in mind yet it retains a homely feel that makes it easy to unpack and settle in with minimum fuss.

Accommodation is split across two levels and comprises:

Living Space

  • Sitting/dining area, flooded with light from the large glass doors leading out to the front private patio courtyard. Decorated in neutral colours with wooden floorboards and pictures of the local area, it is a restful and welcoming space.
  • The living area has large leather couches and a wall-mounted flat-screen television with Netflix alongside free WiFi throughout.
  • The dining area has a large quirky dining table topped with a map of the National Park so that you can plan your next day's adventures in the Lake District over dinner. A mix of chairs and benches provides seating for everyone.
  • A sleek modern kitchen has been designed for convenient catering. There is ample cupboard space together with an induction hob (with extractor over), eye-level oven, fridge as well as freezer and dishwasher. A breakfast bar is a handy spot for morning coffee and provides extra bench space for preparing meals.
  • A separate utility area houses the washing machine.
  • The landing is large enough for a chaise lounge and second television, and is a good place for kids to relax and do their own thing away from the adults with XBox games console for entertainment.
  • Luxuriating in the private Swedish sauna is bliss after a strenuous day walking or cycling (please note it is a coin-operated sauna).

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Three bedrooms comfortably sleep up to six guests. Each room is carefully furnished in calming neutrals with shades of heather and grey, with good-quality beds and bed linen, drawers and cupboards, and electric central heating radiators.

  • King-sized bedroom with tables beside the bed, a dressing table and stool, and reading lights mounted on the wall.
  • The second king-size bedroom is every bit as stylish with a chest of drawers, bedside table and wall lights for reading.
  • Twin bedroom with bedside tables, reading lights, and a low window with deep sill and exposed wooden lintel and has a wardrobe.
  • Two shower rooms, each fully-tiled with big walk-in shower cubicles, wall mounted WC's, hand basins and heated towel rails.

Outside: Private courtyard patio area with lockable storage for securely housing bikes and outdoor gear. There is a drying room also available for your wet gear when the weather is on the damp side.
Off-road parking for three vehicles (two cars can park at the back of Wheelhouse and one at the front).

Additional Information: Prices include bed linen, towels (including tea towels) and utilities. For those who want to use the sauna, it is coin operated and costs 20p per 5 minutes. WiFi throughout the property, as well as central heating, making it warm all year round. Travel cot and highchair available by arrangement. Short breaks available by arrangement with the owner.

Unfortunately, there are no pets allowed and strictly no smoking.
