Virginia Cottage is a warm and welcoming holiday home on the border between Cumbria and Lancashire, close to Morecambe Bay and within easy reach of not only the Lake District National Park but also the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland. The cottage is the owners much loved home which he is happy to share with guests. It is authentic, charming and homely, from the thick stone walls and flowers around the door to the solid oak beams and the owner's personal choice of art, books and antique furniture. The cottage sleeps up to three people in two bedrooms but is especially suitable for couples or small families with a teenager or older child. The location is idyllic yet only a 10-minute walk from the centre of Silverdale where there are shops, cafes and friendly pubs like the Silverdale Hotel. Exceptionally dog-friendly, there are lots of good places and lovely walks to enjoy in the surrounding area.
Silverdale is anything but cosmopolitan, and that's the way locals and visitors like it. It is the night skies rather than the nightlife that is dazzling and, while the meals are memorable, it's more for the superb seasonal produce that goes into the menus rather than celebrity chefs who create them. Where Silverdale excels is in the variety and beauty of its landscape. Many of the guests who stay at Virginia Cottage are walkers, hikers or ramblers, with the odd mountain biker thrown in for good measure. The owner has mapped 15 local different walks from the front door, ranging from an easy walk across fields to the village, to a challenging climb to the peak of Arnside Knott. Other destinations include Trowbarrow, RSPB Leighton Moss, Warton Cragg and Gait Barrows.
Local attractions include the seafront promenade in nearby Arnside, where there is also an excellent fish and chip shop and a choice of boutiques and tea shops. Leighton Hall is a lovely place to spend a few hours, as is Sizergh Castle. The appeal of Grange-over-Sands is as strong as when the Victorians favoured it as a seaside resort, and those with a sweet tooth should make a special visit to Cartmel where the classic dessert, Sticky Toffee Pudding, was invented.
Windermere, Bowness and the southern end of the Lake District are only about half an hour by car from the cottage. Alternatively, drive for 30 minutes to the Yorkshire Dales and spectacular sites that include the Ingleton Waterfalls.
Regardless of the season or the weather, the age and character of Virginia Cottage makes it feel as if you're catching up with a good friend.
