The Old Bothy lets you stay on a working farm in a stunning location on the edge of the Lake District National Park, a mile from The Oddfellows Arms and Greenhill Hotel, and only a few miles from the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Old Bothy is one of two holiday cottages at the award-winning Red Hall Farm, where the owners raise beef cattle amongst 200 acres of farmland, arable fields, and woodland. The self-catering rental near Wigton sleeps four people in two bedrooms. It is ideal for families though it is also very popular with couples and friends who appreciate the high standard of accommodation and blissful quiet that comes with such a rural location.
Guests love the ideal location of The Old Bothy. Sitting on the edge of the amazing UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lake District, and close to the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as Historic Carlisle and Hadrians Wall, means there is always something to do in the area. There are also miles of country roads to walk or cycle from your cottage door. The route from Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle via Hadrian's Wall is a great example, and there is a popular circular route around Caldbeck. Challenge yourself on the 10-mile walk from Great Cockup to Little Calva, taking in Meal Fell, Great Sca Fell, Knott, and Great Calva, or enjoy a relaxing day exploring the Skinburness Peninsula and the Solway Coast. Keswick is 20-minutes south of The Old Bothy and handy for trails around Skiddaw and Catbells. You're also within easy reach of Derwentwater and Whinlatter. Whinlatter Forest has mountain bike hire, a Go Ape Treetop Adventure, an osprey viewing platform, a cafe, and an indoor play centre with a climbing wall. Don't miss the opportunity to get out on (or in) the water. Hire a boat, canoe or SUP, or find a safe spot for a refreshing swim.
Local attractions include The Lakes Distillery in Bassenthwaite, making whisky, gin and vodka. Jennings Brewery is in Cockermouth, while Keswick has the Derwent Pencil Museum celebrating the home and the history of graphite pencils. Take in a show at the Theatre by the Lake, learn about the history of slate mining at Honister, and admire over 100 species of birds and animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park. The Lakes Aquarium is a popular family-friendly attraction, as is Walby Farm Park. History buffs can see Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle Castle and Museum, and the impressive ruins of Lowther Castle and gardens.
Depending on availability, The Old Bothy can be booked with The Old Grainstore for families on holiday together.
