Silver How is a picture-perfect Cumbrian cottage in one of the prettiest towns in the Lake District National Park. The 18th-Century stone cottage is on a quiet residential street in the old part of Ambleside, less than 200 metres from the centre of town and within a short stroll of shops, cafes, and friendly pubs like the Golden Rule. The three-bedroom cottage sleeps up to five adults (or four adults and two children) and is popular with families and couples. Silver How has a private parking area which is situated just a two minute walk from the cottage - a real bonus in the old part of the town where parking is limited.
Ambleside is on the shores of Windermere in the heart of the Lake District, and visitors have easy access to spectacular walks and memorable bike rides from the door. Start your visit with a ferry trip, buying your ticket from the terminal at Waterhead Pier in the same way that holidaymakers have done since 1845. Regular services run to Bowness and Wray Castle, although you may prefer the self-guided option of hiring a motor or rowing boat.
Staying in Ambleside means you're close to one of the most frequently photographed sites in the entire Lake District. Stock Ghyll Force is about half a mile or a 10-minute walk from the cottage. Its 70ft-drop is impressive at any time of the year, but especially after its been raining. It is easy to believe that the force of the water powered up to a dozen local mills. While you're there, stop by Bridge House in Stock Ghyll Beck and take a photo of the 17th-Century cottage now in the expert hands of the National Trust.
In addition to sailing on Windermere, day trips can include walking or cycling to places such as Loughrigg Fell, Wansfell, Scandale and Fairfield. It's also possible to walk or cycle to Rydal Water and Grasmere. Local attractions include the Armitt Museum's specialist collection of rare books and manuscripts, including some original works from Beatrix Potter. The Romans also loved the Lake District, and there are ruins of a fort nearby at Galava, with finds from the site on show at Kendal Museum.
The location of Ambleside, and the comfortable accommodation of Silver How cottage, really are the perfect choice for visitors to be able to experience some of the best parts of the Lake District.
