Sedbergh is a charming historic town, mentioned in the Doomsday book, and boasts that it is England's first official 'Book Town'. You may find rare, collectable and cheap books in the book shops. It is a great place to relax and unwind, have a romantic break or enjoy the great outdoors.
The Flat at 57 Main Street is in one of the oldest properties in Sedbergh, smack bang in the middle of this quiet, friendly market town. It is handily placed to be able to purchase all the provisions you need for your stay. The interesting artisan and specialist shops include a green grocers across the road and a fabulous butcher who sources all the meat from local farms and is just round the corner. If you don't fancy cooking there are 3 pubs to choose from all serving good food. Farfield Mill is just 2 miles away, and Kendal only 10 miles away at the edge of the lakes for more shopping.
Outdoor enthusiasts love Sedbergh and there are a variety of activities on offer. There are great walks from the doorstep, over the fells or along the many low level paths. Sedbergh lies on the Dales High Way, and the Dales Way runs very close by. The views are breathtaking whether you stroll by the river or through Akay Woods, hike over the Howgill Fells or walk to Dent for lunch. For the cyclists there are many road and mountain bike routes, water sports can be enjoyed on the rivers or on Killington Reservoir. There are many golf courses close by including Sedbergh, Casterton and Kirkby Lonsdale, and for those who don't take golf too seriously, have a round of golf at Ravenstonedale, where there are many interesting obstacles. The rich local geology attracts geologist into the area to see what they can find.
For those wishing to explore a little further afield you could visit the Lakes, Windermere is only 40 minutes away. Take a trip to Wensleydale Creamery factory in Hawes and, if you like historic houses visit Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall, with its listed gardens and amazing topiary. Dent heritage centre is only 5 miles away and if you wander on up to the top end of Dentdale, or go to Garsdale Station, you can board a train and travel along the Settle Carlisle railway line. There are a wealth of towns and villages in the area so wherever you venture you are sure to find something of interest and a lovely little tea shop in which to refuel.
